My Route Suggestion of the Old Abandoned LIRR Rockaway Beach Branch

Posted by Transit Guy on Thu Jul 20 21:02:52 2006

Hello everyone,I wanted to suggest a route regarding the old LIRR Rockaway Beach branch that was abandoned in the 1960's. Currently the trackway is owned by the city but has been in a state of deterioration and subject to illegal dumping. I was thinking, they should re use the whole portion that is intact for some kind of shuttle or subway route (I know that portions are currently used for the A train but I mean that re use the Ozone park, Woodhaven stop, etc.). I hear that there are plans to convert it into a bike path and pedestrian walkway but I feel that it is a waste of money and time ( personally I think it would only work with the high line being that its in Manhattan but not for Queens). I know this is a bit weird but would the MTA accept (consider) such proposals from average citizens who live in the area like me (who do I contact)? Does anyone have any other ideas for the abandon area? Part of the LIRR portion can be seen from Richard Panse's photo here towards your left: http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?28741 and in David Pirmann's photo shows the trackbed itself in the 60's http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?31925
