Re: My Route Suggestion of the Old Abandoned LIRR Rockaway Beach Branch

I'd find this particular line very useful myself -- might be a light rail line from the Sheepshead Bay subway station (inside fare control) across the Bay and along the waterfront to the KCC campus.

If you want a glitzy trolley to attract tourists, put it somewhere the tourists might want to go. I'm looking for a form of transportation that will provide a good alternative to the unreliable and crush loaded buses to the campus.

I disagree with you on this one. While I'm all for light rail, exactly how do you intend to route it from the Station to the Bay? 12th Street Bridge? I'm assuming you intend to use part of the sidewalk area along Shore Blvd which I think is more suitable for a bike path instead of the stupid bike lane on Oriental Blvd no one wanted.

And with the "crush loaded" buses, there is hardly enough demand here to justify a light rail line. Theoretically, you can always run more buses and make them more reliable.

You say put a glitzy trolley where tourists might want to go. About ten years ago a trolley was proposed along Emmons Avenue connecting Coney Island and Sheepshead Bay. I think that makes more sense because it could serve commuters as well as tourists (assuming a redeveloped Coney Island which is in the works) if it is coupled with free or low cost parking either near Knapp Street or Floyd Bennett Field. The commuters would come from the Rockaways and utilize the Sheepshead Bay Station. The only downside is that for a portion of the route the light rail couldn't operate on an exclusive right of way.

But to Kingsborough? No way.
