The Montauk Branch can't be converted to subway without add at least one more track, possibly 2. The line is very needed for freight, and close to 100% of Long Island's (Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk) frieght traverses the Montauk Branch. Turning those tracks over to the subway, and throwing of the frieght is not an option, and subway and freight can't share the same tracks. It's dead int he water. |
