Why was 179th St/Jamaica 13 years late? |

Posted by olivermuc on Sat Jan 3 17:56:31 2009 The opening dates at nycsubway.org read as follows:169th St, opened 4/24/1937 179th St, opened 12/10/1950 There is no explanation at all as to why this delay occurred. So, why was the terminus 13 years late? 169th St obviously wasn't designed as terminal for the 4-track QB line as it only features two side platforms. Has it anything to do with the planned Hillside Ave Extension, as outlined in the "IND Second System" plan? Maybe when it became clear that the Hillside Ave Extension wouldn't happen, they had to build one more station as adequate terminal, since 169th St simply had too little capacity. Had 169th St originally been built as express station with 2 middle platforms, we probably wouldn't have the 179th station today. |
