While we're on this point, part of the planning for the IND was plenty of "gap trains" particularly during rush hour service ... they were still doing that when I worked there and picked up some OT just sitting on a siding as a "spare tire" reading a paper. The area between 72 and 81 was one of many which would hold a train "just in case." But the concept of "gap trains" was based on the IRT experience and the IND was built to ensure that service interruptions were as minimal as possible.
