For example, two solid columns of homes approximately 4 miles long had to be torn down, or in a few cases relocated, to make room for the Van Wyck Expressway. It would have been much worse if they had had to make even more room for a median rapid transit line, and the money certainly wasn't there for a subway under one of the service roads. |
