Interestingly, the LIRR proposed building a two-track line which would have stopped in Levittown, but it never happened. Now Levittown is almost totally car-dependent, LI Bus lines on Wantagh Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike notwithstanding...Moses was ALSO the reason Staten Island still has no rail connection with the other boroughs. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was supposed to carry cars on the upper deck, and TRAINS on the lower. Moses put the kibosh on that one, as well as a proposed extension of the IRT down Nostrand Avenue in the fifties... |
