Even in the 1970's and '80s, you STILL had this attitude among many, even if the Subway (even when it was in its worst state) was still the best way to get around. It was only with the advent of the MetroCards, unlimited rides and free bus-to-subway transfers in the late 1990s did this attitude begin to change to what we have today.
