Hotel Pennsylvania Demolition Begins

The end of an era began today with the sidewalk bridges (scaffolding) going up around the Hotel Pennsylvania. This marks the beginning of a demolition which is expected to be completed by 2009 to make way for a new office tower.

The Hotel Pennsylvania was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1919 and was operated by Ellsworth Statler. It was designed by the firm of McKim, Mead & White, which also designed the original columned version of Penn Station located across the street.
