I think of all these bigwigs in real estate (just like the leaders of every other business and govt), who with their money are flying all around the world regularly, and the new buildings they build are generally the same as what is built anywhere else in the world. In ERA slideshows ofEurope, you often see the streetcars moving past newer apartment complexes, and it's the same highrise "box" look, and that is the way they look over here. The cities have all realized that highrise projects for the poor were a mistake. So now you see nice little townhouses (with a lot of classic "pre-war" style masonry (jack arches, etc) appearing in the ghetto. But for the rich, they are still into the highrise "box" concept. As someone said elswhere in the discussion, they have to have floor to ceiling/wall to wall windows now. Their offices at corporate headquarters are the same. Same style everywhere in the world. So the world is like a giant neighborhood to these jet-set real estate moguls, and they are making it look all the same, and it is apparently nothing to them. Meanwhile, where was all of this money 30 years ago, when they were letting all the cities rot? It's like they did that, with the inner city being full of poverty, and now all of a sudden, they decide they want the cities back, and just sweep everyone out. |
