Still doesn't justify the megatrend in America to make Spanish our second language. The difference is that these attitudes have infected younger generations, who also don't want to become fluent in English.

My wife's great gramdmother WAS in the younger generation when she came here.

I know plenty of people who's native language is Spanish who ARE learning English. Where is your evidence that the percentage who don't bother is any larger than it was 100 years ago?

And you can't use Spanish TV as proof. There were plenty of foreign language newspapers around in the first half of the 20th century. Most of their readers also knew English, and some didn't, just like now with those watching Spanish TV.

My guess is that she never faced serious discrimination. My guess is also that she never achieved any benefits from affirmative action - that she would have gotten into exactly the same schools if her surnmame had been Smith.

Half Sigma (who's lately been caught up in affirmative action/human biodiversity stuff) seems to believe that her summa from Princeton would have gotten her into Yale Law so long as her LSAT scores weren't too bad. As I pointed out in a comment, the real issue is not whether she would make it in today, but what things were like 30+ years ago when she applied. My impression is that affirmative action programs have gotten stronger in the last decade or two, so even if Sotomayor would not have made it in to YLS today if she were Sonia Smith, she would have made it in back in the 1970's.

Oh come on. The development of Spanish media in the US is unprecedented. No other language ever established itself as a second language like Spanish has. This is why so many Hispanics stuggle with English. Their native language is too readily available.

Look at the success of Spanish television. RAI never established itself in America like Televisa has.

Look at the success of Yiddish newspapers and theater.

There are MORE Hispanic immigrants now than there were Jewish immigrants 100 years ago, but there is no reason to believe that Spanish cultural products are having a bigger success RELATIVE to the total market.

What success? Did Yiddish print media and theater even last a generation? Spanish television debuted in the 60's and continues to grow. Same with Spanish radio.

You can't compare a few Yiddish newspapers and theaters in NY to the success of Sabado Gigante and Univision.

Don't you agree that assimilation is the best route for everyone?

Honestly, I enjoy Spanish television. I'm be watching Ras de Lona at 7:30pm, and recommend you do the same. I'll also watch AAA and Sabado Gigante this weekend.

I wouldn't say that the effects are significant. My point is only that there are more affirmative action programs in place today as compared to, for example, 1989, and that they are more formalized.

Sadly, affirmative action sometimes leaves doubt in the minds of many when minorities and women advance. "She got the job because she's a woman". "He got the job because they were looking for an Asian". Happens all the time.

Cases like the one involving the New Haven Firefighters is a great example of why people think this way.

I'm not sure that Mexicans are considered Latin. When you hear about a Latino or a Latina, that usually refers to someone from Puerto Rico or the Central and South American countries. Mexico is part of North America, IIRC.

(There is no such continent as "Latin America", so referring to the geographic names is inapplicable. Latin America is shown in dark green on the map below.)

Answer: not many. That crap to them is like The Lawrence Welk Show is to us native boys. The demos speak for themselves. Univision is doing monster business with the younger demos. Telemundo, Galavision, mun2, Fox Sports espanol, and Telefutura are too. If you look at Spanish television ratings, to get the numbers they do, it would mean that every single immigrant is watching them. That's not possible. They are capturing second-generation Latinos as well. Sabado Gigante is great, even for younger people.

"Latin" music is an ever greater link for Latinos to their culture. Even when Latinos prefer English, they prefer groups like Calle 13, and listen to Latino radio. That's why 93.1 in NYC runs English language ads, and the DJ's speak both English and Spanish.

Exactly. For some people I guess it's a fun thing to believe, the idea that Hispanic women are somehow "hotter" than any other women. It really is a racist p.o.v. though. That's not to say that any person cannot have a genuine interest in another person for whatever reason, including their background. I'm just saying it's silly to think that ANY woman cannot be the hottest woman you will ever meet. I'll get personal here...as much as I enjoy the company of Dominican and Puerto Rican females, the absolute hottest woman I've ever known was Irish American.

The ratings and saturation of Spanish and Spanglish stations disagree with you.

Even if they speak English, they probably identify strongly as Latinos in music tastes, dress, and music.

I know that the Hispanic kids who take the J train seem to prefer Spanish, and speak it almost to make a point of belonging to that peer group.

Ask your friends if they watch Sabado Gigante or mun2.

Here's an example of Hispanics not being in touch with each other:

LATV, a network based in LA, hired a FEMALE, PUERTO RICAN, from NEW JERSEY, with a TELEMUNDO background, to run programming.

With that combination, I predicted that the first thing she'll do is fuck with Lucha Libre. Well, since she was hired, she has changed CMLL's time slot, and televised a repeat when a new episode was scheduled to air.

Look at the success of Spanish television. RAI never established itself in America like Televisa has.

That's because RAI's programming in the US sucked. It was geared toward an older generation of Italian expats like AlM's wife's great-grandmother or my own grandparents. My parents and other relatives rarely even watched it except for the soccer. They didn't even watch the news. That's what "Il Progresso" was for. My parents/uncles/aunts etc were still in their Thirties and Forties when they came here and they were not interested in the Italian versions of Lawrence Welk-type fare or old black and white Toto' movies.
Univison and Telemundo OTOH are modern channels that appeal to a broad audience.
If RAI-USA had been even half as good, I would have watched it too when I was a kid instead of just catching an occasional Serie A match.

Ok. Then whatever Italian netowrk with "modern" programming that would "appeal to a broad audience" should've aired programming in the US. But no one did, b/c there was no market for it.

My parents would have definitely watched modern Italian programming had RAI-USA made it available in the 60's and 70's, after all they were watching decent stuff on the real RAI in Italy only to come here and find the channel to be in a time warp. It was like an American moving to a foreign country and finding that the only English-language programming available are Lawrence Welk and Laurel & Hardy reruns.
However RAI's awful programming was in a way a public service to the US in general because it forced newer Italian immigrants to flip to regular stations and learn English.

Now take away Univision and Telemundo, and Mexicans will force immigrants to flip to regular stations and learn English. That has been my argument from the start.

No. It's capitalism. Supply and demand. Spanish-speakers are happy enough with the programming on those channels as to watch them and since advertisers pay based on the ratings and demographics, the channels are profitable.
RAI-USA's quality sucked and was therefore rejected by Italian-speakers.

That has been my argument from the start.

Are you advocating that the government ban these legally incorporated companies?

Not at all. Just showing you that the demand for Italian programming was never near the levels of Spanish programming, or the laws of supply and demand would've applied.

The government can do what they want. I'm just explaining why assimilation for Hispanics is so slow or non-existant.

Nothing to be sorry about. They didn't speak English when they arrived but needed to drive to get to work to start making a living and paying taxes. They learned English quickly enough. My dad even took ESL classes.

My mother and grandfather needed to drive too and "start making a living and paying taxes", and they didn't have Dutch forms, documents, etc. They too learned English (as they had to, as they weren't babied with their native language all over the place here) quickly enough, as they had to.

Making it easier for people (by babying the with Spanish signs, documents, etc) actually makes it harder for those people to assimilate in the long run.

My mother never took the classes but she learned an accentless English from TV, neighbors and doing the "mom thing" (school, shopping, etc).

That's EXACTLY how my mom, grandmother, and aunts and uncles learned English. it was the 1950's, they didn't have a pot to piss in when they came off the boat (literally), but the first thing my grandfather did was buy a TV for them, and yes, that's how they learned English.

That's the advantage of a diverse area like LIC/Astoria versus ethnic enclaves like Bensonhurst.

And this was in the then rural outpost of Suffolk County.

My aunt who was a teenager when she came from Italy took ESL at LIC HS and then graduated with flying colors. She helped teach my parents and my brother.

My mother and aunts and uncles were all teenagers when they came here, and only my oldest uncle knew broken English when they got here. They didn't have Dutch "ESL" classes.

My grandmother never learned it well and failed her citizenship test even though she was the most "American" of them all. She remembers when Italy was a third-world country and never took prosperity for granted.

My grandmother did learn English, and spoke it well, although as she aged, she began going back, and spoke sort of half Dutch/Half English, but that had to do with age, as she did speak it well until she got into her 90's. All my aunts and uncles, as well as my mother and grandfather became citizens....my grandmother is the only one that didn't.

My parents came here because they liked America but were doing well in Italy anyway.

My mother's side of the family left Holland because it was pretty bad there after the German occupation during WWII, and the aftermath of the war. They had it "pretty good" there compared to others, but still chose to come here. Interestingly, while they worked like dogs, they were quite poor here. Strangely, Holland began to get better right around when they left, as did much of Europe, but they struggled hard here, but they did eventually make it. Hard workers.

It's unfortunately the attitude of many more current immigrants that somehow the US should bend and make it easier for them and come with their hands out. That's a big change from immigrant groups prior, as those groups came here and knew they had to work and "bend" to make it here, and they did. You didn't have a whole subculture of immigrants with their hands out, and an attitude "what are you going to do for me".

How much Yiddish papers and theater are there outside of neighborhoods where they live? There's no large onslaught of neighborhoods like that. Sure it's popular in neighborhoods where they live (just like you had German Theater in the 1920's and 30's in German Neighborhoods), Italian theater in italian neighborhoods, etc).
