My guess is that she never faced serious discrimination. My guess is also that she never achieved any benefits from affirmative action - that she would have gotten into exactly the same schools if her surnmame had been Smith.Half Sigma (who's lately been caught up in affirmative action/human biodiversity stuff) seems to believe that her summa from Princeton would have gotten her into Yale Law so long as her LSAT scores weren't too bad. As I pointed out in a comment, the real issue is not whether she would make it in today, but what things were like 30+ years ago when she applied. My impression is that affirmative action programs have gotten stronger in the last decade or two, so even if Sotomayor would not have made it in to YLS today if she were Sonia Smith, she would have made it in back in the 1970's.
