RAI never established itself in America like Televisa has.That's because RAI's programming in the US sucked. It was geared toward an older generation of Italian expats like AlM's wife's great-grandmother or my own grandparents. My parents and other relatives rarely even watched it except for the soccer. They didn't even watch the news. That's what "Il Progresso" was for. My parents/uncles/aunts etc were still in their Thirties and Forties when they came here and they were not interested in the Italian versions of Lawrence Welk-type fare or old black and white Toto' movies. Univison and Telemundo OTOH are modern channels that appeal to a broad audience. If RAI-USA had been even half as good, I would have watched it too when I was a kid instead of just catching an occasional Serie A match. |
