Then whatever Italian netowrk with "modern" programming that would "appeal to a broad audience" should've aired programming in the US. But no one did, b/c there was no market for it.

My parents would have definitely watched modern Italian programming had RAI-USA made it available in the 60's and 70's, after all they were watching decent stuff on the real RAI in Italy only to come here and find the channel to be in a time warp. It was like an American moving to a foreign country and finding that the only English-language programming available are Lawrence Welk and Laurel & Hardy reruns.
However RAI's awful programming was in a way a public service to the US in general because it forced newer Italian immigrants to flip to regular stations and learn English.
