No, but many people know Yiddish because of religion. You are mixing up Yiddish and Hebrew. Many people know Hebrew because of their religion. Very few people know Yiddish for any other reason than that one or both of their parents spoke it. |

When my mother's family came here, they even had to change their names to "more American sounding names". For example, "Helena" became Helen, and so forth....the american versions of the names.Today the opposite happens. Anglo parents will give their kids exotic "foreign-sounding" names. I am the only one in my family (cousins and nephews included) that has a non-Italian first name. Then I go to Italy where parents also now give their kids non-Italian names where Maria becomes Mary and Gregorio becomes Gregory. It seems that people will alsways find the grass to be greener on the other side. |

I know so many Italians who have done the same. Some with long or unpronouncable names did so. But somebody simply named "Marco" or "Carlo" or "Anna" should have no reason to change his/her name. My brother went with a nickname for decades because his real name is hard to say for some but returned to his real name a few years ago. Me and a few others still call him by his nickname because it's cool. |

I read in the LA Times yesterday that she gave a speech in 1996 where she said that she discovered while in college that she was proud to be Hispanic. As she became aware she decided that she would dedicate herself to helping Hispanic people whenever she could and that's why she joined La Raza. It really doesn't seem appropriate to advance someone to such an important position when she has stated that her goal in life is to help one particular group of people. |

Well, of course, she said and did that before she became a judge. She left the Board of LaRaza when she was first appointed to the bench.I don't think a goal of helping Latinos in your personal life is inconsistent with impartial judgment on the court. What about Thurgood Marshall?- he dedicated his whole pre-court career to helping out black people. |

Didn't we already have this discussion when you said a couple of weeks ago when you said that the NAACP was for black people? Thurgood Marshall fought against discrimination, but not just for blacks, although blacks were the most visible victims in his time. Really, how dare you even say that. I'm sure that he never said that he was only for blacks. Even Jesse Jackson would never say such a thing. |

AARGH. Sure he worked to end discrimination generally, but he was driven to that task because of the injustices against blacks. His primary goal was justice for African-Americans, whatever else he may have said. The whole civil rights movement in the South and the move to end separate-but-equal was about blacks. I'm sure that characterizing it as a general correction of injustice (if that is in fact what he said) made it more palatable to the public than merely helping blacks would have been, but what does the CP in NAACP stand for, anyway?Do you have any proof that he never said he intended to help blacks? |

You're changing it around. I never said that he didn't intend to help blacks, just that he didn't intend to help only blacks as Sotomayor had dedicated herself to helping only Hispanics. I don't know about 99%. I've heard of Marshall being involved in cases like Mendez v. Westminster. I'm sure that there are others. She said (and I'm paraphrasing) that she had an awakening and that she would dedicate herself to helping her people. She felt that way in college and she felt that way in 1996. You can't say that you dedicate your life to one group and spin it that you really meant that you are dedicated to everyone. |

Jimmy, you should get the "post of the year" award, as you have mirrored my thoughts on both politically parties pretty well. I am sick of both parties, and I can't find a politician right now I hold too well thought of. Politicians don't want to take ANY responsibility for their actions anymore, and that goes for BOTH parties. |

Who gave her a pass in 1997 after similar comments came to light? Rep...Dots connected :D your pal, Fred |
