I can't remember which, although it doesn't really matter at that level. |

The hotel personnel disappeared for an hour in the afternoon. I discovered they were watching English lessons on the television. Many of them couldn't even practice their religion. Some countries made a value decision. Learning foreign languages was deemed valuable. If someone wants to learn another language, they can. A person's ability to learn a new language declines rapidly with age. Children under 5 can learn several languages simultaneously. The key is that each language has a different person speaking it. Louis St. Laurent, a Canadian Prime Minister, once remarked that it wasn't until he was 8 years old that he realized that not every child spoke English to his mother and French to his father. A more recent Canadian Prime Minister, Jean Cretien, was an exception. He was in his late 30's before he started to learn English. Cretien was also described as being inarticulate in two languages. If someone does not want to learn another language, they'll just watch television, read newspapers, and listen to radio in their native language. Let's hope their exposure to their native language exhibits better grammar than you displayed in this sentence. :=) |

India is a much poorer country than Mexico, yet Indian immigrants in America are far better off than Mexican immigrants. Why is this so? It's because most of the immigrants coming from Mexico are poor uneducated campesinos, which is turn is at least in part attributable to the fact that getting from Mexico to the United States is relatively easy. Coming here from India is far more costly and difficult, so Indian immigrants tend to be from that country's more affluent segments. Of course, he does not mention the fact that English is an official language in India.That's tied in with social class. Most English-speaking Indians are from the country's more affluent segment of the population. It's that segment which provides the bulk of Indian immigrants, and as a result there's a high degree of English knowledge among them. Conversely, a cool fat girl from Sydney, Australia can learn how to operate a cement mixer as well as a dufus thin dude from Port Au Prince, Haiti can. An antisocial family guy from Borough Park can learn how to locksmith as well as a farmers jovial gay son from Iowa can.
