I've heard that when they were new, the R-16s weren't that bad. Karl B says people loved them back then. Poor maintenance, or lack thereof, definitely didn't help in later years. |

Until the 2003 Redbird Ramble, I hadn't ridden that el since 1987...on an R17. The lines that truly scared me were the ones where white people were rare. The 2, 4, 5 in the Bronx, the 2 & 3 in Brooklyn, and the CC were at the top. Most of the other lines, including the J & M at least had significant caucasian ridership. It wasn't racism. It was simply a fear of standing out in the crowd. Then I transferred to FK Lane and I got used to being the only white guy around. |

The area around New Lots Ave terminal was where some of my high school friends (and family) went to get their pharmacuticals in the late 80's. And it looked like the drug den it was. Today, I have in-laws all over that area, and I feel completely comfortable in the neighborhood. |

When I came back to New York during the mid-80's..I had some "homeies" that lived in the Bay Ridge/Bensonhurst area of South Brooklyn.. Use to rider the R train all the way out...or the B train... I never had any problems with being there, even though I was usually the only person of color around. It was cool..cause people that you THOUGHT would be UNFRIENDLY turned out to be MORE than friendly! One of them went back to the Navy...and one moved next door to me here in the Northside. People are the same all over,if you give them the chance. |

No white people rode a 2 or 3 train above 96th St. You really stood out if you remained on. Ditto for the 4 & 5 north of 125th. The 1 & 6 lines had significant caucasian patronage at the north end of each line, so I rode those a lot. The Livonia Ave el? Forget about it. The only white people riding those trains were cops. |

I was once locked out in between cars on a R44 A train at around 2:30 am. The end door wasn't locked properly and I could open it, stepped forward to find the next car's door locked and the first door closing behind me. Eventually someone pointed to me the flip switch and I got out but it was a scary experience.Back then, I didn't know which car types were supposed to have their end door locked. |

Woodside was the choice in the late eighties already. That expanded to Sunnyside and LIC in the nineties. Ozone Park is too far from anything useful to an artist. Fort Greene to Bed-Stuy has already Pratt students and grads (and drop-outs). Maybe the next wave after Bushwick will be Crown Heights to East New York. |

I didn;t mean to imply that I was scared of the Broadway El, as I wsasn't....I rode through every day, at least the western portion of it, and often enough throughout the 80's too on the east of Myrtle part. It's not so much that I was scared, it was more of an uneasy feeling, and it was mostly because of all the abandoned and burnt out buildings, it just gave an uneasy, depressing feeling going through there. Today, I am there all the time. I just love how Bushwick is coming along. Many streets are so nice now. It still has a way to go, but it's not a neighborhood to be uncomfortable in anymore. Again, it's probably because of all the new buildings, and basically 95% of all the abandoned ones are either gone or refurbished now. it's come a long way in the last 10 years, and it's better every day. |

Since I don't ride the J and M as much as I used to when I lived there, it's really noticable to me. While I have been through Bushwick and Williamsburg a few times a month in my car, I have not ridden the Broadway el until today in more than a half a year. What I find the most interesting, is all the young people that now get on at those stations. There are so many 20 somethings and 30 somethings getting on at Lorimer and Hewes now. Enough to be noticable. You never saw that even 5 to 10 years ago, at least not like this. And all the apartment buildings going up near Lorimer! That was a vast wasteland just 3 or 4 years ago. The same thing that's happening in Bushwick is happening there in Williamsburg too, but it's on such a larger scale in Williamsburg. Such huge buildings. |

I *know* the answer to this one ... and it was the same reason for some of the REALLY weird colors for some of the El paintjobs too. MILITARY SURPLUS, dirt cheap ... I'd asked when I was working there, and that was the answer. The "interior paint" came largely from the NAVY (green, gray and the two shades of blue) and the brown, green and orange EL paint came from the ARMY so I was told. The primer was also NAVY surplus ... massive quantities of it, dirt cheap. |

THAT'S the one ... sorry, been a long time and too many toys from hither to yon in between. :)I rolled my own from scratch in 1981 called "TBE - The Big Experiment" written in TI-BASIC, 99 assembler and P-code and for the port to IBM, worked with a really nice guy named Hue An Wang (his dad owned a computer company) which eventually became "Citadel" ... got ported to just about every platform in existence when we rewrote it in ANSI C. It was a room-based thing from which today's "forum-based" boards came into existence ... I always found the other BBS programs to be wasteful, insecure and bloated. TBE in its last new version in 1996 was still less than 64k for its core and highly secure. No TBE or Citadel system EVER got "hacked." EVER. |

Yep ... there were two separate types of church key, though you were only supposed to carry the one for your division. It's that cheesy aluminum S-shaped key that fit storm doors, crew key hole, cab door ... different notches in the flat for each division. B division had the cut perpendicular to the shaft, A division had two notches parallel to the shaft. Still have mine (both divisions) as well as brake handle, reverser and butt plug. Whenever I visit the city, I leave them HERE. But they're useful still at Branford, and I always bring them with me. :) |

The "green" was NAVY ... at least the car interiors ... don't think I ever saw THAT on an EL ... the DARKER greem, yes - THAT was army on the steelwork. But the cars were painted with "institutional green" and the NAVY had a *LOT* of it ... same for the two tones of blue through the 60's ... I guess they painted destroyers with that stuff. It was lead/enamel-based, and rather resistant to chemical washdowns. And we all know where the DECK PAINT came from for the arnines. :) |

This was in service with Arriva Trains Wales a few months ago![]() I believe that the policy of Arriva TW and Central Trains (I've seen two or three of their units in tagged to this degree) is that, when the grafitti is applied when the unit's stabled at an outstation, it's allocated to a diagram which will return it to a major depot the next day to enable removal. As outstations will rarely - if ever - have a spare unit available, it's a choice between cancelling service(s) or running a badly-tagged unit in service for one day. |
