The line that freaked me out the most was the Livonia El. It was SO bad over there back then in the late 80's. I never went back again until Peggy had the Brooklyn IRT tour, and that was the first time I went back. i think that was in 2002. i couldn't believe how much better it got over there. It's still not heaven, but it's not hell anymore either. I figured it must have improved, as I was already used to the area along the Bway el getting cleaned up too.

Truth be told, in the late 80's, I was terrified riding the J between Myrtle and Bway Junction. You would tighten up everytime the doors opened at those in between stations. Then I didn't ride there for a few years, and the first time back, perhaps after about 5 years absense between 1994 and 1999, and I couldn't believe the difference!
I actually rode with my cousin that day, expecting to see the usual "Berlin in 1945" look. We got on at BJ, and proceded to the side doors to look out. We were both quiet. The train stopped at Chauncey, the train stopped at Halsey, and then Gates...the doors closed there, and he said, "Do you notice something"? I said, "Yeah! There's hardly any burnt or abandoned buildings anymore!" I figure if they were able to clean up Broadway, anything has hope.
