Not the BROADWAY ELEVATED line but the Myrtle Elevated above Broadway.
Plus the Tower Interlocking was located there at the time
Now since its fuction has been reduced to unnecessary...it only houses the station house.

Uhm, no. The station was right at Jay and Myrtle, right where the building is now. I went 5o school there in the late 80s, and they were just beginning to tear the buildings down around 1990.

Myrtle Av ran along that line of trees in the center of the streetview looking west from about 200 feet west of Flatbush Av extension:

The line of trees extends through the Metrotech campus all the way to Jay St.

I use tinypic... and its free. You must jump thru some hoops to post pictures here using any hosting site. After you open an account, Upload your pics to the site then pick & click on the pic you want to post, then right click on the message board url prompt that will be to the left of the pic you want to post, cut/paste it to the "Post a New Message" section, then click on "preview Message Before Posting" and your pic should come up. You can move the curser to insert any text to go with the pic. Good Luck!
Theres probably an easier way, but I don't know about it. What I described works for me.

That is correct. The structure did extend to Jay Street. Until the Early 90's, Myrtle Ave was still a street connecting to Jay St. I remember the building on the corner was a three story brick structure, and the ground floor was "Golan Deli". I used to stop in there once in a while, until they tore the building down. Myrtle Ave may have been a little wider than the tree pedestrian walk is now, but I am not sure of that.

I believe the original station name was "Bridge Street", so that is probably correct, but the exit still went to Jay St, and the exit tairs went to Jay Street, at least near the end. I remember the building on the corner in the photo I posted still being there in 1989, as I used to go in the deli/bodega there that was on the corner of Myrtle and Jay back then. I remember when those buildings were all closed and they began tearing it all down.

I agree with your timeline- my memory is the same. But till say that no re-routing would've been necessary- they'd just have to build the complex in such a way that the el remaining completely accessible- i.e. maybe leave Myrtle Avenue at its original width- the pedestrian walkway looks a bit narrow to me...

Maybe, if there was $$, rebuild the structure into a WMATA-type el.

Another interesting tidbit is that I've seen a picture of the terminal right after it became a terminal, in the 1940s- at the time, they built an enclosed transfer across Jay Street (it was probably built on the skeleton of the el segment there- but it was demolished within a few years. I don't think it provided direct access to the IND station- you probably had to walk a short distance, as you would now. But it did get you across Jay Street without traffic, and with less time out in the rain/snow/cold.

The fact that this nice feature was so quickly eliminated shows me that the TA wanted rid of the Myrtle quite early one- they didn't want to do anything to make it more convenient or attractive- also hence the silly, restricted transfer to the IND-tickets only given out at Broadway/Nassau and on el stations south of Broadway (Brooklyn)

The original station was simply called “ Bridge St” and had only a Bridge St entrance. When the el was cut back to that location, the statin was extended west to Jay St and a new entrance built there to facilitate a transfer to the IND for passengers needing access to the approximate lower Manhattan area formerly served by the Myrtle and Lex els when they went to Park Row. Although I don’t have complete information on it, I believe that when the el went through to Park Row, there was a portion of the platform east of the station controls and Lex trains used one portion of the platform and Myrtle trains used the other. When the station was made the terminal, the portion east of the station controls was removed and the diamond Xover installed there.

Although the transfer to/from Myrtle was restricted towards the end, I recall riding the Myrtle in 1958, the year my father died and getting a paper transfer from the A to Myrtle at Jay St. I also remember seeing a note on the NYCTA subway maps circa 1960 that mention the availability of transfers between Myrtle and the IND only at stations between Sumner and Navy St but the transfer from the IND to the el was unrestricted. Of course late evenings and nights when fares were collected on board the trains, transfers were available at Bridge/jay St at the agent;’s booth. By the way when are the rest of you buffs going to realize that Bway/Myrtle to Bridge St is railroad NORTH!!!!. The only reason that the QJ and later the M were changed to southbound was when they were through routed to the Southern Division where they were southbound towards Coney Island. With the M now being routed to Ctl, it has been returned to its rightful direction of northbound leaving Metropolitan, and since at the present time, there is no chance of any through routing between the Eastern and the Southern the J should be changed back to NORTHBOUND lvg Jamaica and SOUTHBOUND towards Jamaica. To those of you who have any doubts, keep in mind that under the BMT/IND track numbering scheme odd numbered tracks are southbound and even numbered tracks are northbound so by observation M2 and J2 tks are headed away from Met and Jamaica respectively making the service operating from those locations properly NORTHBOUND.

I was last there in 1969, in September. I rode the el to Myrtle/Bway rather than take the QJ from Lawrence Street. It made little difference in time, sometimes saving a 12 minute interval, sometimes not.

I attended a horrible private junior/senior high school for all of 2 weeks. They closed down in 1981. The building is now ASA College.

I may go there this Saturday, look at the Bridge-Jay site and then walk to the Transit Museum. I haven't been there in 15 years either.

Anyone now how long it took to go from Myrtle/Bay to Myrtle/Bridge/Jay ? The B54 now takes 34 minutes.

I used to live in Ridgewood and go to school at New York City technical for 2 years in late 80s on J Street. The Myrtle el would have been a lifesaver.
I tried many different ways to get there.
-the M to Delancey Essex to the F to Jay Street Borough Hall.
-the M to Lawrence Street. Back then the M ran all day.
-the M to Myrtle Broadway to the b54 bus
-the M to Myrtle Broadway to the J to Broadway Junction to the A to Jay Street Borough Hall.

I finally settled on the m to the f combination. It was the lesser of all the evils. It was actually faster than the M direct to the Montague tunnel which was a horror. And the b54 bus was a nightmare.

Downtown Brooklyn looks very different from even 20 years ago.
New developments are happening EVERYWHERE....even a new 1,000 plus ft tall skyscraper right in the heart of downtown.
An SBS street transit route might help...but the EASIEST local street between the northeastern and Central/Downtown area for such a route would be DeKalb ave.
Granted...MYRTLE AVE is the most direct connection between
Several nabs...but it is also one of the most congested.

LOL!!

My plan would be to rebuild the EL through Navy Street, then have it go underground and join the Montague Line as most likely a new (now likely 24/7) version of the (W) from Metropolitan Avenue to Astoria that would also allow the (N) to go to 96th at all times.

I am all for a restored Myrtle Avenue el, call it the V or the X, but let it terminate just short of Metrotech, so as not to disturb the nice tree-lined promenade, and build a Jackson Hts-style transfer facility down to the subways.

Imagine the market now of all the Bushwick-residing Millenials wanting to get to Metrotech quickly, or an alternate route to lower Manhattan.

Makes more sense than the Bklyn-Queens LRT. De Blasio ought to take note.

I see why you don't want to disturb that:

Idea would be to connect the line if it were rebuilt at the current (R) station at Jay-Metrotech, which would make it much more viable (the line could underground sooner than Navy Street going south/railroad north if need be). Sure, you might have to disturb the trees, but that can be re-done after such work to connect a re-built Myrtle Line to the Montague line is complete.

That would be a pretty steep incline to make to get from an el to underground coming down along the park to Navy St.. Myrtle takes a dive down starting at Clinton Ave. towards downtown and levels out just after Ashland. On the other side, the hill starts down about Washington Ave towards Broadway and levels out after Classon.

Thinking about the Grand/Myrtle intersection, Lexington Ave trains heading to City Line must've had slow to a crawl down to the sharp RH onto Grand, as that branch was about halfway down the hill heading to Broadway.

It might be easier to use the hill between Emerson and Grand to make the new line head underground.

The point of the Myrtle Av el is to get people to downtown Brooklyn from Ridgewood and Bushwick, a void not filled by the A & C train, and rather ridiculous to take the Broadway el & F and cross the East River twice.

There is no reason to send it to Manhattan. The Manhattan-centric attitude by Dr. Ronan is why it was ripped down.

Even before Dr Ronan the pre MTA TA was Manhattan centric when they eliminated the Southern Div BMT branch lines from the roll signs on the R-32s and 38s. Even the inclusion of the BMT’s Manhattan Bway Line on the R-27/30 roll signs was getting a little too Manhattanish since under the BMT’s line numbering system, the branch lines carried the same number whether the trains operated vis Bway or Nassau St. Under the BMT the Bkln branch line name was more important than the line it operated on in Manhattan.

The IND did build the G line, which did not go to Manhattan.

That's not why they got rid of the Myrtle Ave el. It was because it required rebuilding and re-fleeting with non-standard equipment (.e. R39L), more then Ronan had the patience for. Better to modernize FAST, cheaply, and claim victory by doing next to nothing: sticking more Fishbowls on the B54. But the residual M train with Arnines were just as miserable as the Q cars (and the Standards). Ditto for the 3rd Avenue el.

Culver shuttle disappeared because it had no customers, but they should have done the Lawrence Street/Jay St transfer connection back then because the McDonald Av portion lost its historic access to Wall Street (Broadway-Nassau on the A & C doesn't cut it).

Franklin shuttle almost got axed from urban decay.
