But till say that no re-routing would've been necessary- they'd just have to build the complex in such a way that the el remaining completely accessible- i.e. maybe leave Myrtle Avenue at its original width- the pedestrian walkway looks a bit narrow to me...Maybe, if there was $$, rebuild the structure into a WMATA-type el. Another interesting tidbit is that I've seen a picture of the terminal right after it became a terminal, in the 1940s- at the time, they built an enclosed transfer across Jay Street (it was probably built on the skeleton of the el segment there- but it was demolished within a few years. I don't think it provided direct access to the IND station- you probably had to walk a short distance, as you would now. But it did get you across Jay Street without traffic, and with less time out in the rain/snow/cold. The fact that this nice feature was so quickly eliminated shows me that the TA wanted rid of the Myrtle quite early one- they didn't want to do anything to make it more convenient or attractive- also hence the silly, restricted transfer to the IND-tickets only given out at Broadway/Nassau and on el stations south of Broadway (Brooklyn) |
