They've certainly done a lot for city riders over the past decade.

If they were to integrate the fare systems of NYCT and LIRR/MNRR, they probably could serve city riders far better than they do now. If they had a waiver to operate their trains on NYCT's tracks, they could do even more.

When a new rail line is built on flat terrain, they don't have to replace the soils all the way down to the deepest roots of the existing . So why would they have to do it on an embankment?

When the line was rebuilt in the 1940's in the Rockaways, it was definitely built with rapid transit in mind, hence the high-level platforms. Even the Woodhaven & Ozone Park stations were built high-level.
I'd love to see it restored and re-opened for subway service. It would save a lot of time for cross-Queens commuters, and you'd have another way around possible service disruptions on the Fulton St. line.
I want to have the opportunity to ride over that right-of-way in my lifetime.

The benefit of the Rockaway line that you're not acknowledging is that capital costs would be lower, and it could generate entirely new ridership. Yes, most are headed to manhattan, but you could pick up additional non-CBD bound riders who presently take a far less convenient bus or even train to bus option. It won't have the ridership levels of SAS, but it also won't cost nearly as much to build.

Right. In those days, it was just cars, cars, cars...so we got the Van Wyck "Expressway", etc...and JFK is a dump of an airport. I flew out of there in '09...getting there took forever, and the terminal itself was a throwback to the very worst of 1961.

You're still looking at a cost of perhaps 1 billion. The Rockaways Ridership isn't the highest, its stations are among some of the lowest in the system, the cost of the line has to be justified. Looking at that... its very hard to justify it. However I've been thinking about it, and drawing station designs (yay architecture class is actually working) If they build a line they need to incorporate a lot of techniques to make it as cheap as possible.

Just sayin', it sounds like the records show the original purchaser of records. The defining answer would be who pays taxes? Betcha nobody.

It's the current owner. Here's the 2012 tentative tax assessment for Block 9286 Lot 82, the right of way between Jamaica Avenue and 89th Avenue. Note DCAS is listed under "Owner Name," not "Real Estate Billing Name." It appears you're right about nobody paying taxes.

It makes absolutely no sense that DCAS would be the original purchaser (from whom, the Canarsie Indians?) of a Long Island Rail Road right of way.

You SHOULD be aware though, that the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) went away in 1966'ish. Don't believe there was ever a bill of sale. But DO carry on ...

No, the New York City Transit Authority is still the legal name of "MTA New York City Transit."

I would think a north-south Queens service would be extremely popular. When I was younger & didn't drive, I sometimes went from Flushing to Ozone Park, and the available options were: Q27 to Flushing, 7 to Times Sq, A to Ozone Park; or Q31 to Jamaica to either Q8 or J to A. No matter how I did it, that's a crappy, circuitous commute that can be done in 20-30 minutes by car.

The advantage of using the Rockaway line is that the ROW already exists and is mostly intact; the disadvantage is that it runs through some lightly populated areas. A better location for a north-south Queens line would be Flushing to Jamaica to meet an extension of the Liberty Avenue line. The Flushing-Jamaica corridor is served by 4 different bus lines (counting the 20/44 and 25/34 as one bus each). I don't know the ridership figures, but the 25/34 seems like the best choice because it's pretty direct and serves Queens College. Anyway, good luck getting that thing built.

I'd guess that plenty of people drive to avoid a bus, but might prefer subway service to driving.

Stops at Myrtle Ave and Union Tpk would likely be low-use stations because they would be located in relatively isolated areas where you would have to take a bus to get to those stations. An Austin St stop would get low ridership because it would be too close to 67th Ave and 63rd Drive, neither of which is bursting at the seems. As for Yellowstone Blvd, it's close to Metropolitan Ave in that area and if you had stops on both streets, they'd cannibalize riders from each other. But a stop at Metro without one also at Yellowstone would probably generate decent ridership.

The state of NY,The governor at that time[ ROCKEFELLER S ]forced the TA to be absorbed into MCTA by doing to them what the BOARD OF TRANSPORTATION did to the PSC,BMT and IRT..take them over by making the cost of doing business harder, denying operating funding..and other underhanded schemes..THEN used us to get bonds floated for subway routes that they were NEVER going to build..take money from the TRIBORO BRIDGE and TUNNEL to fund RONANS LIRR..and to get rid of Robert Moses.
After the MTA took over in 1968...the subway sunk faster than a rock tossed in the ocean.

The MTA is the offspring of backroom shady deals, dishonest politicians on par with the likes of Tammany Hall.

You're still looking at a cost of perhaps 1 billion.

Maybe not. If provisions to connect the line to Queens Boulevard are already in place, then construction costs per mile to install new bed, rails, signals and structures will probably put you under 1 Billion.

The Rockaways Ridership isn't the highest, its stations are among some of the lowest in the system, the cost of the line has to be justified.

Fast service to Aqueduct, JFK airport, and new service to central queens with reduced construction costs should justify it.

If they build a line they need to incorporate a lot of techniques to make it as cheap as possible.

There's something to be said for having stations that look attractive. Leaving a concrete slab with painted metal railings and corrugated metal deck walls and roofs would work, but it looks unappealing, and the community will notice.

If you don't mind my asking, where did/do you take architecture classes?

But the next question is rather simple: regardless of what governmental entity that public records indicate owns a particular right of way, in practice, what does it actually mean? Does it really make much difference if the city, the Transit Authority, the MTA, or even the state owns a piece of property? In the end, it is public property. Laws and politics will govern what is done or not done with it. And even if it were private property, the government could condemn it, and laws and politics rule anyway.

Does it really matter who owns it? THEY ARE NEVER GOING TO REACTIVATE THE ROCKAWAY LINE, PERIOD. EVER!! The only people who really want it reactivated are railfans, and for what reason I have no idea.
There already is a Rockaway Line. It's the "A" train. Even if there once was a small iota of a thought of reactivation, that was killed with AirTrain.
And to those who bring up the Aqueduct Casino and a possible convention center, remember, that when the ROW was discontinued by the LIRR, Aqueduct was in it's heyday getting between 25,000 and 50,000 attendence each day.

And if you want to argue it with me, DREAM ON, it ain't ever going to happen.

That's all well and good, but they STILL own many of the subway lines on private ROW.

I did the Woodhaven station back in the early 90's. It was extremely interesting.

I forgot about Oasis. And it gives the same information I stated, that Selkirk and Edwards for some reason have a hard time understanding, don't want to believe, or whatever.... that the MTA owns some of the subway lines, not the city.
And the city owns the abandoned part of the Rockaway line.

Go further up the line. That's the part on the Viaduct, which doesn't have soil, so less trees grew there. The rest of the line has 50 year growth trees.

But that would also mean that there is less encroachment from vegetation on the viaduct, and thus a greater possibility that the concrete and steel is not as damaged as you might have thought. The embankment is overgrown, but at least in that case it isn't an actual structure.

We were talking about the trestles, not the viaduct. The Viaduct only runs from liberty junction to where the Atlantic interlocking was.

????

I don't give a SHIT if the line "goes to Rockaway" or not. The point is the section in the middle, the Abandoned section for an area of Queens that has no service at all.

What would be more wondering is why someone would go to so much lengths to avoid admitting they were wrong.

Well, the "cross Queens" and "extra Rockaway service" reasons were supposed to be extra gravy for reinstating the service. Individually, none of these reasons (including reinstating service north of Liberty Avenue) is enough, but together they might improve the chances a bit.

It's not just railfans anymore Jeff:

There are elected officials who would like to see it revived, and I suspect Genting and the Governor may very well want it, with Genting paying for some of the costs as part of building the convention center if that happens. This is much different than at any other time with the idea of this coming back as subway.

The arrangements made with the MTA were likely a sublease rather than a direct lease which would have had to be done with the city. back in the early 1960s pre MTA, the original pre Bob Diamond Historic Railways museum negotiated with the NYCTA for sale of the old trolley ROW between Neptune Av and the old w 5 St trolley depot. The NYCTA gave the museum the OK but couldn't finalize the deal since the ROW and W 5 St depot were both owned by the City of NY and the city would have to finalize the deal. The "Donald's" father, Fred Trump made the city a better offer and got the ROW and associated property instead.
