I would think a north-south Queens service would be extremely popular. When I was younger & didn't drive, I sometimes went from Flushing to Ozone Park, and the available options were: Q27 to Flushing, 7 to Times Sq, A to Ozone Park; or Q31 to Jamaica to either Q8 or J to A. No matter how I did it, that's a crappy, circuitous commute that can be done in 20-30 minutes by car.The advantage of using the Rockaway line is that the ROW already exists and is mostly intact; the disadvantage is that it runs through some lightly populated areas. A better location for a north-south Queens line would be Flushing to Jamaica to meet an extension of the Liberty Avenue line. The Flushing-Jamaica corridor is served by 4 different bus lines (counting the 20/44 and 25/34 as one bus each). I don't know the ridership figures, but the 25/34 seems like the best choice because it's pretty direct and serves Queens College. Anyway, good luck getting that thing built. I'd guess that plenty of people drive to avoid a bus, but might prefer subway service to driving. |
