It indeed added up to 30 minutes in some cases. The dwell times at those stops-especially Jamaica and Liberty Avenues is what caused it.

I think they want to truncate the Woodhaven SBS to Queens Center Mall because of the horrible traffic congestion on Broadway and Roosevelt Avenue which causes unreliable service on the Woodhaven/Cross Bay Blvd corridor. The ridership between Queens Center and Woodside is quite impressive.

People seem to forget that at 63rd Drive there's a shopping Mall as well as several other stores as well as a short walking distance to a large apartment complex called Lefrak City, among several other apartment dwellings.

Is that really the way to run a line? Make people feel pressured to backtrack to a place where they can have hopes of getting a seat because if they don't they will definitively have to stand for miles on end? Pressure the company to make sure these standees exist during the non-stop segment in order to keep the line profitable? Bypass whole neighborhoods of people who don't (pre-2005) have reasonable alternatives for getting to the Rockaways within even double the time the Q53 could have brought them?

I mean, yeah, if the B41 became entirely non-stop between Kings Highway and Downtown Brooklyn, and sliced its frequency in half or so, then I can totally see people packing in, maybe backtracking to Kings Plaza, and those that get a seat saying, "What a wonderful ride!" Never mind that people in East Flatbush may also want to go to Kings Plaza or Downtown. They can take the B49 to the B9, or they can walk over to the B46. Never mind the major intersections with potential riders and subway connections all around being bypassed along the way. Never mind that maybe some people would have preferred to get off at Nostrand for the 2/5 trains. People south of Kings Highway want to get Downtown.

I just don't see what makes the Rockaway Park to Woodside route so special that it, and no other place in the city, warrants an intraborough multimile non-stop segment bypassing many willing patrons. Even the LIRR branch it replaced had intermediate stops, didn't it?

The Triboro Coach Q53 was something of an anomaly being an intrA-boro express, yet was not an official express route.

The purpose for that franchise was to replace the LIRR branch. Yet the city said the hell with Parkside, figuring LIRR-Forest Hills and Glendale could serve it, and some other bus (QM10 was it ?) could handle Brooklyn Manor, though it was not far from LIRR-Woodhaven. Then when LIRR got rid of Woodhaven in the 1970's, that bus got a stay of execution to 2010, likely because people avoided the J train as it was a dangerous ride through Brooklyn in the 1970's and 1980's.

Nonetheless, I think they over did it in the last decade with the Q53 with as any stops as it has.

The QM23 (the Brooklyn Manor bus) was down to one run I think in each direction before it got cut. Hard to comment on people's riding habits in general with that kind of service span.

One thing to note is that the bus went to Midtown; the J/Z didn't (at least not directly).

Did they really only invent this route in order to keep the Q53 nonstop? I thought the QM23 was run by GBL?

I don't know who ran QM23. There were a lot of political and geographical issues with what private bus company got which franchise. Brooklyn Manor (at 99th or 100th Street equivalent) is 6 or 7 blocks to Woodhaven Blvd, so beyond the Q53's reach.

They wanted to get RBB line people to midtown, which explains their indifference to Parkside (they could walk to Forest Hills or take the Q11 to the Queen Blvd subway as it was close enough), yet the LIRR at Woodhaven was for Wall Streeters, so they got them the QM23 at Brooklyn Manor.

One reason why it’s special to go from rockaway to Woodside is the fact that Rockaway has shitty transportation alternatives. They have been writing about it in The Wave for decades.

That was always the plan. The Bronx had thr first draft released in Spring 2019, and the final draft released in October 2019, and they will make adjustments after comments from the public hearing in February. It's just that the changes to the Queens plan may be more extensive than those to The Bronx plan.

Bypass whole neighborhoods of people who don't (pre-2005) have reasonable alternatives for getting to the Rockaways within even double the time the Q53 could have brought them?

They had 4 other bus lines that traveled the Woodhaven/Cross Bay Blvd Corridor-Q11, Q21, Q21A ,Q41.

Just because Green Bus Lines didn't have their act together, why in the world would the Triboro passengers have to suffer.

After the TA takeover and forcing the Q53 to make those extra stops-they realized they shot themselves in the foot by the mass overcrowding that resulted so they extended the Q21 to Queens Center but by then the damage was done. People would not ride the Q21. They still packed on the Q53 and the dwell times were so bad on the Q53 the eventually the Q21 would overtake it.

As far as the Q53 being so crowded as a non-stop express, I was trying to make the point that the Q53 was well patronized in its original form-premium fare or not.

It is true in some areas like Jackson Heights.

Yes, but many of the complaints are more about dumping at an inconvenient subway (like the Q49 quasi-replacement not going to 74th St. or the cutting back of the Q66) than dumping at the subway per se.

I have to say, though, I'm glad to see they finally thought about providing some bus coverage to the 90th St / Elmhurst Ave. area. Elmhurst Ave. may have been made unsuitable for bus service in the intervening years, but I always thought there should have been a route on Elmhurst Ave. proceeding onto 37th Avenue in Corona to serve the shopping area there. But now that those are all one-way, it wouldn't work as well anymore...

Initially, MaBSTOA employees who had spouse passes were given the choice between keeping the MaBSTOA only passes with the spouse privilege and Bus/Subway passes for the employee only/no spouse. Many chose the option with the spouse privilege because they lived in areas where they didn't need a subway pass. I believe that now the spouse privilege has been eliminated entirely. I have no knowledge of the pass setups that existed on the privates before they became part of MTA Bus so, like you I don’t know what might have been grandfathered in or eliminated.

By the way, according to some old time subway employees I knew, the B of T (and possibly the early NYCTA) had spouse privileges but unlike the buses, where the operator can easily see each individual pass holder, some employee wives would flash their pass through the old slam gate, go through and pass out of sight of the station agent where they would hand their pass to a friend (or two) who would then go through the same gate allowing unauthorized people to use the pass privilege. Eventually, the agency got wise to it and revoked the privilege. Had the current system with Metrocard type photo IDs been in place at the time, such cheating would have been impossible and the spouse pass privilege might still be around as it is on LIRR and M/N.

They create entire departments to be able to justify a promotion for a favored individual. By some strange coincidence, when that person retires or decides to leave the organization, they decide the Department is no longer needed and it gets dissolved. Even when a favored employee is booted out because he did something upper management did not like, he gets six months to find a job and is given the misterious title of Director, Special Projects.

Good work is seldom rewarded which is why morale is so low. When morale is high, an employee will take the extra step to make a difference, rather than believing it isn't his job. I don't know how many wrong numbers called me over the years, but I always took the few seconds to look up the Department they wanted to give them the correct phone number. Most others would just hang up and say it was the wrong number. Sometimes all it takes is that extra step to make a difference. Employees with low morale do the minimum amount of work.

Don't make waves and just follow orders without questions the best way to move up in the organization. Trying to change it only gets you in trouble with your supervisors. As long as the MTA culture does not change, nothing will improve.

Byford wants to do the correct thing but can't do it alone.

I can give one good example of NYCT not telling the truth.

The Bronx final plan had two so-called "new" routes. The M125 is the southern/western half of the Bx15 so it's definitely not new (and the M100 won't travel across 125th Street anymore). The Bx25 was once used as a rush hour service to travel directly to Secfion 5 from Allerton Ave, so they really didn't do any favors by bringing this as a "new" because it is traveling the same route.

Here’s another. They told Rockaway residents several years ago that if they allow half the Q22s to terminate at Beach 116 St cutting service in half to. Belle Harbor, they would be able to add service is the rest of the route east of B116 St. The community agreed.

Now they want to entirely eliminate Q22 Belle Harbor Service and cut service in the rest of the route from every 10 minutes to every 20 minutes without presenting any data to show how crowded to buses would be,
