Non accuracy in station naming is a common failing. BART has a "Macarthur" station at 40th St Oakland . Not only is there no rider access at Macarthur Boulevard, the platform doesn't even reach it The Ashby Avenue station entrances are 3 blocks south unless you count the parking lot. |

Much like Lefferts Ave becoming Lefferts Blvd. Let's also remember that the Liberty Ave BMT stations retained their old street names in some manner into the 1990's. |

The curve entering Van Wyck Boulevard was protected by a timer back in those days - the one between Van Wyck and Sutphin was not. A similar situation exists on city-bound "A" trains on the express tracks between Van Siclen and Liberty Avenues - no timer on that curve, so you can do 40 MPH if you think you can get away with it. Back in the good old days, "F" expresses routinely did 40 and some motorpeople did more than that - i.e. that R-10 and another train of R-6 and R-7 cars (S motor=1233) as well. That is a relatively broad curve and once the train unwinds from it, it is often hauling ass.wayne |

I especially loved the 'cowboys' who would depart Roosevelt at full speed and keep the throttle wide open all the way through the curves west of 65th St station - full power until approaching the timers just east of 36th St station. They were few and far between. Then there were the 'Cautious Cals", who would power off at the bottom of the hill right at the entrance to 65th St station (or some even earlier in the middle of the down slope between Roosevelt and 65th) and coast all the way down until the aforementioned curves. FYI, during the power crisis of the 70s, there was a square 'C' sign on that slope before 65th St where the motorman were required to shut off and coast by rule. The signs are probably not there now. |

The nighttime "G" shuttle would be from Jamaica Center to Van Wyck Blvd. If that was to happen, what would serve the Crosstown Line?"When just prior to the opening of the Archer Avenue extension, there were actual signs made up to have "N" trains (and nighttime "G" shuttles)" Actually, there were legitimate station signs of the G and N trains at Union Turnpike/Kew Gardens. I remember seeing those around 1986-87. Until the late 1980's, there were several signs at that station which displayed the E,F,G,N running there. I wonder why those signs were put up in the first place. The sign said that both the G and N (no R, as this plan was well before the R ran to Continental Ave in '87) were supposed to go to Jamaica Center, but I never seen that happened. The Archer Avenue Subway was already done by this point (Construction ended in late 1983/early '84). Also, back in 2007, when I waited at the Van Wyck (Briarwood) station, I could of see the old G sign that has been covered with the new service sticker which said "To Archer Ave". |

The entire grade separated tunnels for tracks D1A and D2A were built as part of the Queens lines contract under Public Works Administration (PWA) project No. 2741 in 1935 and 1936. The original tunnel lighting was installed and operative. They were called tracks D5 and D6 in 1935 and were destined to go the Rockaway Blvd. The bellmouths was built originally south of Van Wyck Boulevard station to the middle of the present interlocking just north of Jamaica – Van Wyck. When the Archer Avenue Line was built and extended, the original tunnels was left, but new tiles and tracks were added. I kind of figured the provision for the Van Wyck Blvd./Archer Ave. line was built at the same time as the rest of the Queens Blvd line; given the numerous bellmouths elsewhere, it makes perfect sense. I'll bet it certainly made things a whole lot easier when construction on the Archer Ave. line began. |

I believe the downhill run from Roosevelt-Jackson, passing through 65th street was the fastest one on the system. Those R-6's would literally "scream" through that station. The only other run that I think equaled this was the 86th Street to Grand Central downhill run on the Lexington Avenue express. My father recalls riding this in the 1940's and 50's. He said they were so fast on that run that the motor sounds "disppeared." This was way before the 59th street express station opened in 10/62. |

Well this is close to it, but according to one of the old signs that hovered above the tracks on the platform at Union Tpke. station(they're gone now, this was about 26 years ago), the E and F were to continue to 179th St, and the G and N were to go to Jamaica Center. There was to be a G late night shuttle train from Van Wyck Blvd to Jamaica Center (This is what the sign actually said at Van Wyck Blvd underneath the black sticker covering. Whether they actually had plans to implement this scheme, I do not know.)The G did ran to 179th Street during late nights in the 90s though. |

Sorry about that..no harm was meant..I loved it when an 46 took that hill..especially in "regulated mode" of 60mph..best ride in the system at the time if you loved speed.. |

Jamaica avenue/Hillside terminal First...THEN Down to Rockaway Blvd along a median in the proposed Van Wyck Expressway..then elevated to Rockaway Blvd to join with the 120th avenue route from the Rockaway line. When Moses pulled his usual stunts..the line was to be relocated to the service road.. Queens COUNTY screamed bloody murder that the line was first delayed for the Hillside Branch..then deferred completely. Moses "promised the line WOULD BE BUILT"..but as you can see..nothing ever became of it untill the Archer line was proposed and built.. The Jamaica Van Wyck station..sits on what would have been the first of the IND VAN WYCK BLVD line. |

I liked the A train express out of Euclid Ave to Broadway East New York. That uphill climb from Liberty Ave to B'Way ENY was just enough to slow it slightly as it pulled into the station. |

Similar platform signs for the G & N to JC were at 67th and 75th. I recall wondering how they were going to deal with layups on the express tracks. Presumably they would have had to run the Hillside express at least as far as Parsons until after the N stopped around 8PM. Or, they could have cut the N back to Continental after rush and somehow fit the E, F & G on the local. The big problem with the G & N to JC, however, was they were locals and there would have been a mass exodus to the E & F at Van Wyck and Union Tpk. It would have made more sense at the time to send the E and the N to JC and the F & G to 179th. Cut the G & N to Continental starting at like 6:30-7PM. |

They were similar signage at both 67th Ave and 75th Ave? I don't remember seeing those signs at those 2 stations. When were they taken down? |

Does anyone know how the G late night shuttle would of worked? Would the trains relay on the Jamaica Yard leads by the Union T'pke station? |

Also, what if the G and N was to terminate at Jamaica Center, then what about Continental Ave? Would the G or N still be able to terminate there at other times? |

They're widening (actually replacing) that long Van Wyck Expressway underpass under Queens Blvd. They will eventually restore the passageway to the north side (but not the south side) of Queens Blvd near the Briarwood library. |
