The curve entering Van Wyck Boulevard was protected by a timer back in those days - the one between Van Wyck and Sutphin was not. A similar situation exists on city-bound "A" trains on the express tracks between Van Siclen and Liberty Avenues - no timer on that curve, so you can do 40 MPH if you think you can get away with it. Back in the good old days, "F" expresses routinely did 40 and some motorpeople did more than that - i.e. that R-10 and another train of R-6 and R-7 cars (S motor=1233) as well. That is a relatively broad curve and once the train unwinds from it, it is often hauling ass.
