Because Van Wyck Boulevard ceased to exist as a street in 1950, when Robert Moses opened the southern portion of the Van Wyck Expressway. When that happened, the tablets started to refer to a non-existent street, much like Ely Avenue in Long Island City. Today, 62 years later, the wall tablets still refer to that non-existent street.
