Well the NIMBY's outnumber the YIMBY's.

Y = Yes (I know most here figured that out anyway).

The issue is, what would the line connect to on the north end in Rego Park?

Although East Side Access could justify bringing back at least portions of that line.

Millennials and younger don't like the suburbs. They want to live in urban settings with public transportation.

There are already bellmouths in place N/O 63 Dr station on Qns Blvd for the express purpose of connecting to the Rockaway Line. Had certain events not taken place over the years, it’s likely that the Rockaway Line would connect to the IND at 63 Dr and Liberty Jct would not have been built. As I have mentioned in a few post on this topic, a B of T report from 1950 on new subway lines indicates that although the connection at Liberty Jct was planned, it was supposed to coexist with the connection from Qns Blvd at Whitepot Jct. At the risk of mentioning it, that same report indicates that the original plan to connect the LIRR ROW to the IND from an extended Pitkin Ave through 76 St had by that time been abandoned and replaced by what became Liberty Jct.

Why does a bus company take over the row at Atlantic Avenue is this legal? My plan kick them (bus company) out open the portal back up to the LIRR for future use go strait to connect with Queens blvd. OR make a train connection to Atlantic Terminal and if possible Jamaica, just my thoughts!

Yes this has been talked about many times I would love to this come back as a rail line not a park.

There are a lot of proposals to re-purpose abandoned freight only lines for commuter service. The basic problem is that passenger service on these lines was abandoned for a reason. That reason was lack of demand. The reason for that lack of demand in NYC was usually lower fare competition from subway lines.

The Rockaway Beach Branch was built in 1912, before Queens was developed. Queens developed far from the RBB's right of way. If you were to calculate the number of people who would gain walk to train access with the RBL's return, you would find it's very little. It's being far from major roads means that it won't be suitable for feeder buses.

The only area it passes through that's under-served is Parkside. That's not enough to support the line or its construction.

LIRR service from parts of the abandoned Rockaway ROW to Penn Station or East Side might work today.

But the way it built up, you would think it would appeal to LIRR customers more than subway riders. A lot of people in Howard Beach, Ozone Park, and Woodhaven became express bus customers when crime and grime and reliable service became issues.

The population is there. Maybe part of the issue is what they do for a living. Small business owners and shift workers instead of 8-to-5ers'.

I would not trust NYCT to provide quality service if the Rockaway ROW was restored.

LIRR might. It seems like there are condos going up everywhere and more would be built around a renovated line.

There is talk in Elmhurst about bring back the LIRR station there. People are frustrated with NYCT service.

Reopening a closed station is a lot easier than bringing back a rail line that's been abandoned and deteriorating for decades. In some can-do cities like Dallas or Charlotte that sort of project might work, but certainly not in New York.

The Problem with the LIRR retaking the RBB is that due to FRA regs, it wouldn’t be able to share any part of the Rockaway Line ROW with existing NYCT service so it would basically have to terminate at Ozone Pk defeating the whole purpose of reactivation.

re: it was supposed to coexist with the connection from Qns Blvd at Whitepot Jct.

If any of these connections had been built as only two tracked (Lib. Junct. 63rd Drive or Winfield) wouldn't it have meant a lengthy route through central Queens with more passenger volume; and, by the late 1950s, and '60s this would have increased (what has been for decades), the extremely heavy ridership on the Qns.Blvd. line especially passenger volume at Roosevelt Ave.?*

*I'm not implying at all that they shouldn't have been built. I'm just wondering what future decades would have held for ridership volume, and efficient operation of this line during rush hours.

Also, if there had been an LIRR connection to the IND, wouldn't some portion of the LIRR fleet need to have been built to IND-BMT dimensions? about 60 ft. long and 12 ft. high?

I don't know the MP-54 dimensions, & don't have them right now; would they be compatible and operable on the IND-BMT?

So this would make any plan operating any kind of LIRR service over the transit system moot as well? If these have been FRA regs, why was there ever, thoughts or serious plans to integrate subway and LIRR service?

that is what I was thinking.

I'll guess the regulations went into effect after major shared ROW plans were drawn up.

I remember plans to run NYCT Subway on the LIRR Lower Montauk from Jamaica to 63rd Connector. I don't know if it was a proposed shared ROW or if LIRR was going to continue it's service too.

But I will always remember the small-business owners in Glendale working hard to get signatures against the proposal.

Queens Blvd Express trains were always packed, but 8-car Locals were not. They, especially the GG, was deigned to feed expresses at Express stops.

One of the Locals, probably the BMT one, would have been diverted from Forest Hills onto the Rockaway Beach Line. I don't think they anticipated very heavy ridership, which is why they decided to forget about it, simply do Liberty Jct, and bustitute the rest.

MP54's were 65' long and 13'6" tall with the box vents or box headlights. That is too tall for the subway.

RBB areas would have spurred economic development had it been converted from LIRR to a branch off the Queens IND.

While Rego Park is close to the Queen Blvd Line, Parkside was ignored, Brooklyn Manor served only by the pokey Jamaica el to lower Manhattan, Woodhaven Jct by a LIRR Flatbush service and IRT to Manhattan, or a long walk to IND at Rockaway Blvd for the A train schlep through Brooklyn to Manhattan, and ditto for Ozone Park.

Good service service spurs high density development and higher property values, which is the case of the Flushing Line and the Queens Blvd Line. The Jamaica el - not much - mostly private homes and smaller apartment buildings. One can tell where the Express stops are along Queens Blvd by the volume and size of apartment buildings.

They can Eminent Domain the cheese bus company. I don't think there would be much point of taking just Ozone Park people to the the LIRR Brooklyn terminus. The junction faces the wrong way to take them to Jamaica.

I can't find the link, but MTA did a reactivation "study" a couple of years ago and said it would cost something like $8 billion as either a LIRR or subway service. IOW, they don't want to do it, and engineered the study for their pre-conceived conclusion.

I read that and it was significantly cheaper as LIRR instead of subway because the subway would require substantial tunneling. The provision on the QB line runs to less than a block away from QB, and on top of that the tunnel would have to go under the LIRR main and rise inside the ROW. It’s just very lamentable that they did not do it in the 1950s.

Excellent post. It’s not simply a matter of having a subway station nearby, but it’s about commute lengths and commute options. Think about all the people who don’t take a job because it’s hard to get to, or who choose not to live in a particular neighborhood because it would cause a difficult commute. Then there are those people who drive to work. The RBB line will simultaneously improve both radial commutes (to/from Manhattan) and cross commutes (between outlying points not on the way to Manhattan).

Good service service spurs high density development and higher property values, which is the case of the Flushing Line and the Queens Blvd Line.

The big difference between these lines and the RBB is that the former follow the street grid. This permits development parallel as well as perpendicular to the line. Moreover, parts of the RBB are within park land, which will not be developed.

Any development around Parkside, is limited by a cemetery, within its 1/2 mile walking distance. You're going have to go back to the 1890's, when cemeteries were a viable destination for transit lines.

The distance between Jamaica and Liberty Aves is approximately 1 mile. This means any people living between them are within 1/2 mile walking distance from one or the other.

only by the pokey Jamaica el

It's a lot less expensive to provide better service on the Jamaica Ave El.

You forgot Woodhaven. I used to live in that area that was packed with one & two family houses (98th off Atlantic) & mass transit to/from that area quite frankly sucked. Long walk the the Woodhaven Blvd J train station, even longer to Liberty Ave & the A train, slow pokey Q 11 Woodhaven Blvd bus that got you to QB, then transfer to the subway, all sucked. Atlantic Ave bus was no help either.
My old landlady used to tell me that the fastest way to get to Manhattan back then was to jump on the LIRR train at the Woodhaven stop & you'd be in Manhattan in about a half hour...for 50 cents.

You can't do much to the Jamaica el and will always be a downtown service. Middle track and a new el east of Cypress Hills to skip most local stations saves some time in one direction or the other, but loses most on-line business.

The rest of the RBB wasn’t immediately bustituted but remained as an LIRR line as far as Ozone Pk fo a few years after the iND takeover. Right around the time of the IND takeover, the TA was in the middle of resignaling the west and east side IRT subway and replacing most of the prewar IRT rolling stock so there wasn’t really enough money for anything else. Keep in mind also that at that time new subway lines and rolling stock were property of the City of NY and not the TA and much of the money intended for new subway lines and infrastructure improvements was diverted to subway car purchases instead.

There were never any plans for joint IND/LIRR operation anywhere. The operation would have been a complete IND takeover. Even the SE Queens operation over the Montauk branch would not have been a joint operation but rather a complete takeover of the westbound LIRR tracks for exclusive subway use.

The problem with the RBB is that like the proposed Rockaway connection toe Roosevelt Av, the connections are only to the local tracks either requiring a change to an express service or a longer local ride into Manhattan. That would be all right for passengers from Ozone Pk north but for passengers on the existing IND Rockaway Line the current route through Bkln would be preferable since it’s express al the way.

I think we should wait to see if ridership returns to pre Covid-19 levels before starting any major new projects. Otherwise we could be running empty trains into empty stations and empty terminals.

The MTA itself does not want the RBB, and never has.

Between Jackson Hts and Queens Plaza, the difference in running time is only 4 minutes. They didn't add the BMT service to the local just to feed the E&F. They thought some people will get on and simply ride through. The IND between Broadway-Nassau and 34th or 42nd is quite slow and negligible difference with an 8th Avenue local.
