I intend no disrespect to you, but I disagree. if they'd closed the line, it would likely NEVER have been replaced with anything. Similar promises were made with other closrues, and peoples' trust utterly betrayed. Two brief examples- the Manhattan portion of the Third and Second Ave Els was to be replaced with the SAS. Even in a best case sceanario, only a little bit of that line will ever be built- DECADES after the closures of the Els.The Bronx portion of the # Ave El was to be replaced with rapid transit in the Harlem Line. We didn't get that, either. I have no reason to be confident that the Franklin Shuttle would be repalced with anything if it was closed. |

I haven't seen the contract, but I do have a fairly detailed handout on the project that Mysore Nagaraja gave out to my civil engineering class at the time. I'll see if I can find it. Recall that both of the two big materials testing labs in New York were just exposed for falsifying reports. If the poor quality of the concrete is indeed the result of some kind of fraudulent activity, that's where I would look first. |

Perhaps the "cellular" concrete I've seen done was around here. They use it for driveways. As to the concrete testing labs, read that too. I recall some fun with Yankee stadium as well as far as bad cement went. And yeah, while the labs are definitely culpable, one would think that a construction firm and their vendors would know how to do a proper mix, no? Then the lab wouldn't have to be falsifying anything to get paid. |

The contractor has to rely on the materials inspector to certify the mix. The contractor has no way of knowing if the concrete supplier is skimping on the mix and the testing lab isn't paying attention (or worse, is in cahoots with the supplier). |

Wellll ... like I said, we've seen many adventures around here with "cellular concrete" pours and it's widely popular for low cost, lots of air trapped driveway like things. I think they even did some at the hairport here for runway overruns where the plane is supposed to sink into the ground before hitting the trees. That's the "cellular" concrete we've heard about up here.I didn't go down to the Frankie and do any test bores, but if 10 year old concrete is falling apart, and it's "cellular" then seemed pretty safe to assume that what was poured there was crap ... |

Of course, the right way to replace something antiquated is to keep the old running until the new is ready. But that's just not the NYC way, unfortunately. The way around here is destroy the old, with a vague promise of something new and wonderful, then have a financial crisis, the new facility never gets built (ex: local service on the Harlem Line), or built decades later, and inadequately at that. Examples- SAS and Archer Ave Extension. |

Scarce transit $$$ can be better spent elsewhere. Tear it down this time or be prepared to 'rebuild' it every 15 years. A waste of money. Eliminating it would improve the heavily used Brighton Line by being able to move the switches to north of the Prospect Park station, speeding up that bottleneck.Replace the 'S' with a B48 bus extended to Parkside Ave & Ocean Avenue. |

I don't know what he is talking about either. The merging/separating of B and Q trains at the Prospect Park station would have to be done, period. If it is suggested that it would be better to allow Q-trains to enter the Prospect Park station platform (formerly the shuttle platform and THEN merge with the express track - there is the little problem of the differing elevations of the tracks near the north end of the Prospect Park station. A similar problem exists on the Brooklyn-bound side of the station. Even if the tracks were always on the same level, a bottleneck situation would still be present. For example, look at the Canal Street station on the A and C lines, where A and C trains have to merge and separate to/from the local and express tracks. Trains still sometimes have to wait outside the station, when one train is switching from one track to another. Just why should Brooklyn riders have to travel into Manhattan (or almost practically into/near Manhattan) just to make connections? One major feature of the Franklin Shuttle is that it keeps local Brooklyn rider traffic local. The bus substitutions don't really help plenty of riders, when used as a replacement for the Franklin Shuttle. Just my thoughts. Mike |

It would nice if the FS got extended to the unused upper level on the Mtyle Ave station on the (J) line someday. With stops between Fulton Street and Mtyle of course. The NIMBY would probably block it though, as it would be a EL for the entire extension. |

Actually there were plans to extend Fkln north from its present terminal but at the time it was originally proposed it would have involved extensive reconstruction of the line in the area of Franklin/Fulton since the Fulton St el which was at one time connected to the Franklin was at the same grade level as the Franklin. If I recall correctly, one such proposal would have the crosstown line proceed as an el along unnamed streets and eventually connect to the station complex at Qnsbro Plaza where there is a provision in the structure east of the station for some sort of elevated line. |

The brt/bmt plan was to extend down bedford ave as a combo subway/EL to QB plaza basically following what is now the G line. |

Then e neighborhood should pay for it.I am in support of rebuilding as trains are far more reliable then buses but I am tired of people who pay nothing into its operating cost demanding things. If transit riders had to shoulder all the costs of the criminal union work rules in the co tract you would see how fast opto would be rolled out. In NYC, far to many people are takers tax wise and not payers so they just want more more more because they're motoring the full cost of the operations |

This would cost half as much if the fade unions would take reasonable pay and work rules changed,The head of mta construction was quoted as saying that the boring machine digging the Sas has more than double the staffing as the same machine digging a similr tunnel in Spain due to staffing requirements pushed thru by unions. It's criminal. The mta is a loss in confidence in bind investors millisecond away for imploding under debt. The labor unions are banking on the state bailing them out. It won't happend. There will be massive service cuts and layoffs to the likes never seen before. I hope all mta employees understand this and tell tier labor leaders to help avoid this by supporting common sense work rule reforms such a opto, new job descriptions for station agents , bus integration etc . The day of recognize is closer then you think |

The labor leaders are Marxist socialists . I am sure most mta employees are just everyday people looking to live a peaceful life. Take a look at the ussr, Cuba, china before the capitalist renaissance . All poor as dirt, hungry. The socialist gravy train just gets fatter and fatter until the gravy train end under crushing debt |
