SMH WTF It is a repeat? I did not realize the shuttle needs major work again... With this money, lets extend it to Bedford and Nostrand.... But seriously if they knew that there was "poor quality concrete" who is responsible for maintaining the route.

Probably met spec when it was installed. "Cellular" concrete is typically suitable for a driveway, not so much for things that are heavier than a Toyota ...

Contractors can only bid and perform on the detailed specifications submitted to them. I know NOTHING about what happened, but if those were the specs, then they *had* to build as specified. If those WEREN'T the specs, then somebody was asleep at the switch on "acceptance."

I can understand G.O. that had the Q terminating at Prospect Park or I always felt that Shuttle service should be extend during peak hours to Brighton Beach and extend to B to Coney Island, but overall, I don't see beyond those ideas if it is cost worthy to return the platforms back to handle 600' trains.

SO there would be more operational flexibility. The track configuration and platforms mean they can never run more than a 2x75foot train at a 10 minute interval. The line can't be used for diversions, as was done in the past.

For what the MTA is going to spend on this and what they already spent a number of years ago, they could have easily built a would-be-most-welcome surface streetcar lines all the way to downtown Brooklyn, the Dumbo area and Red Hook. Instead, they just replicated what has existed for decades, with no actual improvement in anything.

But with the surface streetcar line on parallel Franklin Avenue, it wouldn't be needed and the money used to repair this slow-crawling line could have built more extensive and valuable rail transit facilities. The TA property could then have been sold to real estate interests, recouping some of the costs.

But the TA has no interest in building light rail. Places that I thought would be the last places on earth to build light rail (like Dallas) have it, but not NYC.

So if the Franklin Shuttle wasn't rehabed, the money wouldn't have gone to something useful. Just doesn't work that way.

Nah, 300' would be sufficient, enough for a 5-car 160 or 4-car hippo, which can be easily attained by cutting a full-length train. But 150' is just ridiculous. In about 20 years, when it's time to replace the Hippos, MTA will have to order 4 75' 2-car sets (even if the rest of the Hippo replacement order is 60'). Or maybe they'll just use that excuse to close the Frankie for good. :[

Agree if the G had access (even if it is walk transfers)to all subway lines that it passes nearby it would be a vital line like its Manhattan counterparts....

Also MTA could save money by eliminating the B 48 with an extension of the shuttle

I'd love to ride that. And Denver. I was in Denver maybe 25 years ago and never would have guessed they would become a light rail center. I wonder if the light rail has improved the downtown. I was at a hotel barely on the outskirts of downtown. They warned me not to leave my car overnight in the public parking and my room key activated the elevator. Never saw that in any other city.

I agree that the shuttle platforms should have been extended to 600 ft and I would even go so far as to say that Franklin should have been rebuilt into a 2 track Island platform. However due to the track configuration at PPK which make Franklin trains local, turning them at BBC and extending Bs to Stl is not a good idea since it would require double Xover moves N/O BBC. It would probably make more sense to let Fkln trains go through to Stillwell alternating with Qs if they were to be extended at all which is probably not needed at the present time.

If they double track (except for Fulton St.) the row north of BBG, then they can run 3 trains at once. If the add a second platform (at Fulton), would be like Nostrand Ave., but I believe the only entrance is at the front, then they can run 4 trains at once.

Agreed. I believe that this could be accomplished if the shuttle were to be connected to hook up with the G. Then a tunnel should be built connecting Brooklyn with Manhattan at 23rd St. (Manhattan), with both the G and S being extended west on 23rd St. to Javits Center. (This hook=up would require closing the Court Square Station of the G.) Even in all the fantasy maps that have been posted and all of their fantastic subway line extensions in the outer boroughs, I don't recall any that show this, what seems to me to be an obvious biggest bang for the buck.

Because of the curve? Malbone Street notwithstanding, the curve is not that bad and it was in continual use from the time it was opened in 1918 until (IIRC) 1959, when the crossover was built. Even then, it still saw regular passenger service for a few more years when Brighton Locals operated it on Saturdays.

Sounds like we're getting ripped off. That line was supposedly completely refurbished less than 20 years ago.

Sorry, Psycho, I'm not related to them! Now, go take your meds and read the "Help Wanted" section of the Sunday newspapers!
