...without making passengers crazy.

I know there are plenty of arguments why the M can't run its full route on Saturday and Sunday.

But the need for more weekend service from parts of the Eastern Division to the heart of Manhattan has been acknowledged, in restoring J to Broad Street and extending the M to Essex.

And it could upset the apple cart to have completely different "north" terminals on different days of the week, essentially because it would confuse riders to expect a train to go one way and then have it go another (though historically this has been done).

So ... how about ... run the weekend M to 145th/8th (as Wallyhorse has been suggesting endlessly) but, to cut confusion, change the signage (easy with electronic signs?) after the M leaves Essex to B. That way, no one taking the train north on 6th Avenue will expect it to go to Queens. And ... sign it M on its entire southbound trip so no one expects they're getting on a Brighton train.
