If the regional connector gets built, it would make more sense to have a Pasadena/Long Beach line (combined Gold/Blue) and an East LA/Santa Monica line (combined East LA Gold/Expo.) That way, everyone gets access to Union Station.

Of course, this would only work if they somehow managed to connect the regional connector to both ends of Union Station somehow.

I'm afraid that appears to be impossible. As far as I can tell from the Regional Connector alternatives every alternative revolves around a junction around Little Tokyo station south of LAUPT on the East LA extension. I would say its a safe bet that only one alternative will be constructed, and that both the Blue and Expo lines will use it to reach Union Station from 7th and Flower. If the Regional Connector is built with one of the alternatives above then Union Station will undoubtedly be on the same branch as whatever line goes to Pasadena. The only swing station as it were is the Little Tokyo station, which either ends up on the East LA or Pasadena lines, depending on which alternative you choose. For alternatives 1, 4, and 5 Little Tokyo would be on the Pasadena route, while 2, 3, and 7 place it on the East LA route. Alternatives 6 and 8 create what looks like a subway junction just south of the current site of the Little Tokyo station, eliminating the station in favor of a portal and creating a new station two to three blocks southwest. These two alternatives are clearly drawn up with the possibility of through-running, but the other alternatives likely would not rule it out so long as the track layout allowed for the proper turns to be made.

Unfortunately under any of the alternatives a through running arrangement requires any route not serving Pasadena to avoid Union Station. I'd definitely prefer alternatives 6 and 8 because the possibility would exist for a flying junction between the Pasadena and East LA routes. The Little Tokyo replacement station would form a nice turnback point, allowing access to Union Station and points north from the East LA line with minimal backtracking. If one of the surface alternatives were selected then Little Tokyo station could always be rebuilt or relocated to provide either a convenient turnback station or a transfer. It's possible the junction could be a little like a smaller Rose Quarter, with platforms on both the East LA and Pasadena routes in close proximity to each other.

Oh ok, that changes things then. :p

I'm not sure that providing East LA route customers with a one-seat ride to Union Station really justifies the cost you'd incur building two different alignments. With every alternative but 6 and 8 you could run a train from East LA to Pasadena to provide that missing connection if you so desired. Even then 6 and 8 don't appear to specifically rule that out, I was just reading them as single handed junctions.

I don't see why all of the lines would need to go to Union Station. I think that most riders heading East or West would prefer not to have to go to Union Station.

A transit advocate is reporting that the two finalists are alternatives 5 (all subway) and 3A (half street running).

To the blue line tracks at Washington and Flower. With the blue line having 5 minute rush hour headways and Expo likely having the same turning the trains at 7th/metro will be interesting. It can definitely be done, but any delays on either line and it will all go to sh!t.

Both these alternatives are intriguing. The things I like about the all-tunnel route (Alternative 5) are:

1)it would enable faster running times through downtown than a street-level track.

2) if the junction is constructed properly, both the Eastside and Pasadena lines would be able to run through to Long Beach or the Expo line

On the other hand, the partial street-level alignment(Alternative 3A) has some interesting features. I like the separation of inbound and outbound service on Main and Los Angeles Streets.

Also - and this is pure fantasy - it would be far less expensive to link future light rail lines to a street-level system. I am thinking in particular of a possible reconfiguration of the old Burbank-Glendale-Echo Park-Downtown line, which would really benefit these communities. The present local bus service into downtown from Burbank is dreadful, and LRT would would be an incentive for higher-density development in these close-in suburbs. It is already happening, in fact.

Since the Subway tunnel is defunct, a future streetcar line down Glendale Blvd. could turn on Temple Street and head right into the downtown connector at Main Street. (I would, however, realign the Glendale portion along Central Avenue, because Brand Blvd is now too congested to handle light-rail traffic - the old private ROW in the middle of the street is now a heavily landscaped traffic island.)

TRUTH!!!

Reagan shuttered California's state hospitals in the 70s and dumped thousands of mental patients on the streets, with no funding for community resources and no strategy to provide care.

An early example of the "compassionate conservatism" we have come to know so well.

This is not to say there were no homeless people in Los Angeles or the Bay area before that - but this dumping of the mentally ill created a nightmare that is still going on.

30+ years later we have still not found a solution. Incarcerating those unfortunate people in state hospitals, sometimes for life, was certainly not right. But turning them onto the streets and failing to provide the proper community services was - and is - far worse.

My original rationale behind including Union Station was that it's an important transit hub, with both subway lines as well as a number of bus lines stopping at the station.

On the other hand, the regional connector will connect to the subway at Civic Center. And most of the bus lines stopping at Union Station continue through downtown as well. So it's not needed as much as I thought...

The subway can get crowded with Metrolink riders at 5:00 pm. Given that the Regional Connector will provide better access to the jobs on Bunker Hill some of the trains will need to go to Union Station. Even if only half of them do that's still probably 12 TPH at rush hour and half that the rest of the day. But if you look at freeway patterns the predominant commute direction is east to west away from downtown in the morning and to downtown in the evening. Most of the jobs are on the west side. I think that the large majority of East LA commuters will want access to downtown and West LA. Pasadena and Union Station not so much.

Well that's a bus. And at least part of the reason that it's a bus is that at the time the valley opposed rail. And I don't recall there being any Orange line intersections without traffic lights. Plus there have been numerous accidents. So much so that some bus drivers almost come to a complete stop even when they have a green light.

But anyway my main concern is I don't want the Expo line to end up being slow. Without grade separation we're going to end up with another Marmion Way situation where the trains are running 10-15 mph. The same goes for the gold line extension just east of downtown. No one over there has complained. Funny that LAUSD favors taking another look at the Farmdale crossing, but AFAIK hasn't mentioned the schools next to the gold line.

Metro was supposed to buy an additional 50 P2550's as an option to the original 50 car base order. 16 of those were to be for Expo (which already gets cars from the original order) and 34 of the cars were headed to the blue line. Someone mentioned on The Transit Coalition message board that this never happened and that Metro let the 50 car option order lapse. If so, the blue line will be stuck with the P865's for a while. And a few P2000's as well. I don't know that the gold line will be able to get rid of all of them. Will 50 cars be enough for Expo Phase 1, Phase 2, the Gold line, and the gold line extension? I don't see how. Expo by itself will likely need that many.

LA Times blog

Amtrak is offering 25% off coach fare on three California routes—including Pacific Surfliner trains between San Diego, Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo—for travel on Saturday only.

The special is part of the first National Train Day, an Amtrak effort to increase ridership and share a bit of history about the rails. The discount also applies to the San Joaquins—the train route that runs round-trip to Bakersfield from Oakland or Sacramento—and the Capitol Corridor, which operates between Sacramento and the Bay Area.

For out-of-towners: Special train day packages to Los Angeles include two nights at the Hilton in Universal City and admission to the Hollywood Wax Museum. Prices (including taxes) start at $291 per person from Santa Barbara, $307 from San Diego and $319 from Palm Springs. Rates are good for travel in May only; call (800) 268-7252.

There also will be a number of activities at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, including photo displays, train tours and a 2:30 p.m. concert by singer-songwriter Drake Bell.

Sounds a little lame, but what the hell, I'll go check it out. My kids like Drake Bell's TV show. I dunno if they like his singing. I doubt it.

Those alternatives are right by where the line passes over the old PE Subway. I still wonder with all of this why no one ever thinks of using that, or at least part of it. (If it was severed between Flower and the freeway, then since the line runs down Flower, it could connect to the tunnel to the east to the old terminal, in the basement of a building converted to condos (the space is probably not used by the new development).

Now, this site: (Electric Railway Historical Association of Southern California) does not even mention the any building foundations being built in the space of the tunnel, but instead says that it was simply it was filled in, due, to a claim by the city that it was "unsafe" due to "incompatibility" with the Bunker Hill redevelopment project because "the tunnel lacked reinforcing steel, hence nothing could be built above it". (While, "As a matter of fact, the Harbor Freeway, a defence system highway, was constructed directly over the tunnel in 1947, after U.S. Army and state engineers had determined that the subway was so strong that no bridge structures or caissons would be required". This would seem to suggest that the construction was actually above the tunnel, and there should be no impediment to removing the fill-in. (Perhaps reinforce it to satisfy the city's concerns).

I think that most of the tunnels were closed off already. IINM a big part was closed when they built the California Plaza Towers.

The Subway Terminal Building was going to have a PE Car as an attraction but something happened to prevent it. I took a picture a couple of years ago of the car that they were going to restore. I think that there was something wrong with the tunnel. Some sort of oil or something. I think that it was a natural deposit and they had to seal up parts of the tunnel.

What's the "California Plaza"? I had always heard it was the Bonaventure Hotel construction. (Or is that itself the "California Plaza towers). Still, this article implies the construction was above the tunnel, and that they were afraid it couldn't hold the weight. It also points out that this is disproven by the fact that the freeway was built over it.

Now this thing about oil I had never heard of, and the historical association site doesn't mention it. Still, that sounds like something that could be easily drained off.

(I also never heard of them planning to have a PE car at the terminal. That at least would have been nice).

Cal Plaza are 2 50+ story buildings across the street from the Subway Terminal Building. But maybe I heard wrong about that. Here's the wiki article. But I haven't heard of anyone planning to use the old tunnels. Hopefully they can one day be used for something even if it's for pedestrians or bicyclists.

The one improvement depending on your preference is that the old route was to run on the street. This one will most likely be underground.

It copies the info from the Westwood site, which reads:

The only physical alteration to the site came about in 1967, when a portion of the tunnel between Flower and Figueroa Streets in downtown was filled in to accommodate the foundation of the Bonaventure Hotel.

That's the source of the belief that the tunnel is permanently unblockable. However, it says "to accomodate". Not even "to make way for" or anything like that. This would actually hbe compatible with the other account, that it was only filled in because of a feared weight limitation for the contruction being above it. It's like this info glosses over the full details of exactly why it was filled in, yet you can still read it between the lines.

So I don't know why absolutely NOBODY is thinking of using this tunnel for all the rail expansions (not even the fanciful "future" ones like in the other thread), or nostalgia lines, like the section in San Pedro. Perhaps they too misread the Westwood info and think its space is built in. Even if it was, they could still use the two halves for something!

I tried to contact the erha, but their e-mail address is expired or something.
