I'm going to bookmark this thread and post some LA area news that I come across. Well we'll see how long it lasts anyway. Feel free to add your own LA area news if you want.

Some recent news to start off with. I found out what's going on with the trains going out of service at Union Station. It's part of Metro's new procedure for getting homeless out of the system.

Proposed 0.5% sales tax increase headed to November ballot. That would put LA County sales tax at 8.75%. This would be used to fund new projects and according to the release accelerate the schedule of current rail projects which could include Expo, Expo Phase 2, Crenshaw, fare gate barriers, and the Harbor Subdivision. I don't know what the odds of this are of passing, but they don't put it on the ballot unless polls show that it has wide support and has a chance of passing.

It's not fair to the people that use mass transit to have them subjected to panhandling and offensive odors just because most of the people that ride transit are poor. Our transit system is not a provider of homeless services and LACMTA is not the appropriate agency to provide these services.

The problem with downtown LA is that by design the county decided to put nearly all homeless and dependency services in one concentrated area surrounding skid row. It doesn't help that LA Central jail releases inmates just a few blocks away. Now the city and LAPD are trying to clean up that area by getting rid of the drug dealers that prey on the homeless with dependency problems. Two years ago you could walk down Main Street around the intersection with 5th and see dozens of people sitting on the sidewalk OPENLY shooting up and turning tricks in both the portajohns and the tents provided by the advocacy groups. Now that is mostly gone. Downtown is becoming a place where people can get help without being assaulted (as much) by criminals instead of the revolving door that it's always been.

100% in agreement.

If it means that I have to wait a few extra seconds before I can board a train at Union Station, then so be it. (Although they don't do this on the Gold Line, from what I've noticed.)

Are you not at all familiar with the services available for the homeless downtown? I already said that the reason that the homeless are there is because that's where the services are and you respond that there are no services.

You should walk around downtown especially east of Main. That's where all of the services are. They're everywhere around there. You've probably heard about the people that have been getting dumped by hospitals in downtown. There's also many that have mental issues. These people DESERVE help. Not to wander around the subway without getting the help that they need.

Take a look at these blogs to get an idea.

Central City East Used to be homeless and now lives in subsidized housing.

I hope that if I am ever homeless and need help that people won't let me wander around public transit and pretend that they are helping me. We need to get rid of the drug dealers and the people that are there to prey on other homeless people so that we can get help to the people that need it.

Re: Metrolink riders seek upgrades/extreme commuting

Waking up at 2:50 in the morning so that you can leave by 4:15 to drive 33 miles to catch a train to work is ridiculous. She needs a new job or needs to move closer to work. That's two separate commutes IMO. And the complaining about restroom access being only on the one platform is also ridiculous.

However I did use that station for a month and the platform is in the sun in the afternoon and can get extremely hot. How hard would it be to throw up a canopy and some benches? They're right about that part.

Metrolink riders seek upgrades at Santa Ana station

A year has come and gone, and Karol Potter is dreading another long, hot summer.

A loyal Metrolink rider, she complained last year that the bustling, sun-baked east platform of the Santa Ana train station lacked basic human comforts, such as shade, drinking water and restrooms.

In October, Potter was among 140 frustrated train riders who signed a petition asking the Southern California Regional Rail Authority, Orange County Transportation Authority and city of Santa Ana to provide a little relief.

So far, it hasn't arrived.

"In the summer it gets so hot," said Potter, 51. "Women sweat in business attire standing out there in the sun."

Potter lives in Menifee, between Lake Elsinore and Hemet, and prefers making the 59-mile commute to her Orange County job in Santa Ana by rail or carpool. Like many Inland Empire commuters, she undertakes a radical morning ritual dictated by her devotion to mass transit:

Her alarm goes off at 2:50 a.m. and she leaves her house by 4:15 a.m. to make the 33-mile drive to Corona, which has the nearest station on the Inland Empire-Orange County line. Because she and other commuters leave in the dark, they are often wrapped in thick business suits, sweaters and jackets to ward off the morning chill.

Potter and other members of the Coalition of Metrolink Riders see themselves as the rail system's target audience and wonder, as the transportation agencies prepare to increase service, why their comfort is not of greater concern.

By 2010, the goal is to have commuter trains running every 30 minutes from 5 a.m. to midnight weekdays between Fullerton and Laguna Niguel. Seven locomotives and 59 passenger cars have been ordered, new track has been laid and parking lot improvements are scheduled or underway for stations in Fullerton, Orange, Tustin, Irvine and Laguna Niguel.

Metrolink officials say the responsibility for making improvements at the historic Santa Ana station rests with the city. But city officials say they share the concerns of Potter and others. The city has applied for funds from OCTA for the upgrades but won't know until sometime this summer whether it will get the money, officials said.

Metrolink riders Rick Strengberg, 55, and Cecilio Bonilla, 57, say the Santa Ana station has several design flaws that make life tougher for passengers. A ticket machine, for instance, faces the sun, making it unreadable in daylight hours, and it frequently breaks down. In addition, riders who have a 10-trip pass must validate their tickets before boarding.

"Those are the ones you see running," said Strengberg, who rides the train daily from Chino to his job in Santa Ana.

Riders must climb the station's pedestrian bridge to reach the east platform, often forcing those who have to validate or purchase tickets to break into a jog to make the train. In the past, riders would sometimes cross the tracks to reach the east platform, an action deemed highly dangerous by Metrolink officials. But the pedestrian bridge has put a stop to such track jumping.

"Some stations have no amenities of any kind," said Denise Tyrrell, a Metrolink spokeswoman. "Our primary concern is the safety of the passengers, and we thought the pedestrian bridge was an excellent choice because of many individuals walking across the track."

But the walk to the bridge takes time, and sometimes passengers, especially those running late, can be seen eyeing wristwatches nervously trying to decide whether they have time to use the restroom before bolting up the stairs. One plus, Tyrrell said, is that each passenger car has a restroom and is air-conditioned.

The picturesque depot, the third-busiest Metrolink station in Orange County with 1,766 daily riders, does have a cafe and indoor seating, while stations in San Clemente and Mission Viejo, which are used less, have neither.

With the added Metrolink service, annual ridership at the Santa Ana station is expected to double to more than a million by 2030, said James G. Ross, Santa Ana's public works executive director.

"We are looking at enhancements to the station that include more parking and some upgrades" that Potter suggested," Ross said. "It's overdue for updates."

Riders are already afraid that adding station comforts will mean higher ticket prices, Potter said. She took exception to a recent report that the city plans to paint the station and install surveillance cameras -- using money she believes could have gone for canopies on the east platform.

"Well, maybe if they added more amenities to the station and other stations where there are none, more people would use the stations," she said.

There was a large fire this morning in Hollywood at the intersection of Sunset and Vine. The Metro station is a couple of blocks away at Hollywood/Vine but in a surprising twist the Channel 5 news crew was very concerned about letting their viewers know whether or not the station remained open. Problem was they constantly referred to the subway as "Metrolink" instead of Metro. They must have said Metrolink over 20 times before finally interviewing a fire captain who let them know that the Metro station was still open. Before that one of them actually said something along the lines of:
We're trying to get information regarding the Metrolink station. I know that this is a very busy station and is full of commuters using Metrolink from Inglewood that are headed to Hollywood and downtown.

Ummm...neither Metrolink nor the subway go to Inglewood. People in LA are utterly clueless about our own mass transit, but at least they are aware that it's there and that people use it. That's a start.

(LA Metro) Expo delays, FixExpo.org, and environmental racism

Curbed LA

Transit fan drama regarding the Expo line continues as one of the more well known young transit advocates in LA gears up for legal action against the MTA regarding the lack of grade separation on the Expo line at Dorsey High School. I predict that the MTA will eventually build an elevated line with the money coming from who knows where causing a 1 year delay.

Well, I can't blame them for being upset. One region being treated diffferently than another. If underpasses or overpasses near Dorsey would rectify the problem, so be it. The last thing LA needs is another 10 years of lawsuits over a claim that does have some merit. One more year of construction, or even two, are better than the alternative.

By the way, this isn't really racism. It's economic class. Culver City has a lot of black residents. What this is doing is pitting middle and upper-middle class blacks in Culver City against poor blacks in South Central.

The part of Culver City that Expo is going through is north of the black area of Culver City. It's north of the 10 fwy and is really more a part of west LA. It's nearly 100% white and is much wealthier than the upper middle class, mostly black area to the south.

And one existing school and one under construction right next to the gold line extension just east of the first street bridge near Boyle Heights. That is really a bad configuration if you ask me. The trains will have to run slowly through there. Unlike the blue line which has 50 mph sections where it crosses intersections.

Easy, you are so correct. Most of the homeless we encounter in Dayton are the mentally ill, who used to be in mental institutions prior to their closing in the mid 1980's. We provide MH and AOD (Alcohol/drug services to them as well as Casemanagement at local MH centers. We also have a homelss shelter and a day shelter, where they can obtain medical/dental services. The challenged is to prevent them from fally "Prey" to the drug dealers who get them hooked so they can get their SSI checks. And too, with the closing of the local State Psychiatric hospital next month, this is going to compound our problem

Many people were calling it the Aqua line, but I don't recall that being what the MTA actually wanted to name it. I think that Rose might have been the color that the MTA wanted now that you mention it. I remember that some on the board felt that any shade of blue or red might have gang connotations. I think that some wanted the line to be brown. Bernard Parks actually called for an election to have the entire county vote on it.

They have the right side of the street dug up, but I thought that was all utility relocation. The actual connection to the blue line will be near the end of construction. IIRC the original plan was for the blue line to be out of service between Grand and 7th/metro for a week or so, but now they recently announced that they could get it done in one weekend.

But that's silly. We already have lines with both of those colors, one of which goes through some "notorious" areas.

It's too bad that they already used orange -- that could have been a color for the Expo line.

It will be short lived anyway. I think that it was in the same meeting that Metro announced their desire to switch to a letter or number system at some point in the near future. When you start getting into Aqua vs. blue, yellow vs. gold, etc. it gets hard for most people to identify on a map. I've seen people heading the wrong way on the red line because they thought that the orange colored line on the map was the gold line.

I didn't realize that Metro had a blog until now. It's not much to read so far. The posts are all links to transit articles. But someone is getting paid to do this. I wonder where you sign up? :)

Their video section on youtube does have some interesting looking videos of historic interest that I'm going to take a look at.

There were tracks there until a few weeks ago! :)

There was just one set of tracks that IINM was used decades ago by Southern Pacific.

If they keep on building lines, they're going to run out of colors. I think a letter or number-based system would work fine.

Plus we're going to have more than one line on the same track. When the regional connector is finished trains from Pasadena will be able to run to East LA, Santa Monica, and Long Beach. I don't know that's what will happen, but I don't see why not.

Gold Line to Santa Monica? (was:Re: Expo construction pics)

Why not Gold? Build the regional connector tunnel and set it up for through running. Have the Blue line run through to East LA, and the Gold Line run out to Santa Monica. I suppose you'd have the problem of access to Union Station, but it doesn't seem like a terrible thing to have the East LA folks bypass that station when they're gaining direct access to downtown.
