It's not fair to the people that use mass transit to have them subjected to panhandling and offensive odors just because most of the people that ride transit are poor. Our transit system is not a provider of homeless services and LACMTA is not the appropriate agency to provide these services.The problem with downtown LA is that by design the county decided to put nearly all homeless and dependency services in one concentrated area surrounding skid row. It doesn't help that LA Central jail releases inmates just a few blocks away. Now the city and LAPD are trying to clean up that area by getting rid of the drug dealers that prey on the homeless with dependency problems. Two years ago you could walk down Main Street around the intersection with 5th and see dozens of people sitting on the sidewalk OPENLY shooting up and turning tricks in both the portajohns and the tents provided by the advocacy groups. Now that is mostly gone. Downtown is becoming a place where people can get help without being assaulted (as much) by criminals instead of the revolving door that it's always been. |
