Most of the homeless we encounter in Dayton are the mentally ill, who used to be in mental institutions prior to their closing in the mid 1980's. We provide MH and AOD (Alcohol/drug services to them as well as Casemanagement at local MH centers. We also have a homelss shelter and a day shelter, where they can obtain medical/dental services. The challenged is to prevent them from fally "Prey" to the drug dealers who get them hooked so they can get their SSI checks. And too, with the closing of the local State Psychiatric hospital next month, this is going to compound our problem |
