TRUTH!!!Reagan shuttered California's state hospitals in the 70s and dumped thousands of mental patients on the streets, with no funding for community resources and no strategy to provide care. An early example of the "compassionate conservatism" we have come to know so well. This is not to say there were no homeless people in Los Angeles or the Bay area before that - but this dumping of the mentally ill created a nightmare that is still going on. 30+ years later we have still not found a solution. Incarcerating those unfortunate people in state hospitals, sometimes for life, was certainly not right. But turning them onto the streets and failing to provide the proper community services was - and is - far worse. (Take this to Off Topic Chat for further discussion) |
