Why not Gold? Build the regional connector tunnel and set it up for through running. Have the Blue line run through to East LA, and the Gold Line run out to Santa Monica. I suppose you'd have the problem of access to Union Station, but it doesn't seem like a terrible thing to have the East LA folks bypass that station when they're gaining direct access to downtown.
