Both these alternatives are intriguing. The things I like about the all-tunnel route (Alternative 5) are:

1)it would enable faster running times through downtown than a street-level track.

2) if the junction is constructed properly, both the Eastside and Pasadena lines would be able to run through to Long Beach or the Expo line

On the other hand, the partial street-level alignment(Alternative 3A) has some interesting features. I like the separation of inbound and outbound service on Main and Los Angeles Streets.

Also - and this is pure fantasy - it would be far less expensive to link future light rail lines to a street-level system. I am thinking in particular of a possible reconfiguration of the old Burbank-Glendale-Echo Park-Downtown line, which would really benefit these communities. The present local bus service into downtown from Burbank is dreadful, and LRT would would be an incentive for higher-density development in these close-in suburbs. It is already happening, in fact.

Since the Subway tunnel is defunct, a future streetcar line down Glendale Blvd. could turn on Temple Street and head right into the downtown connector at Main Street. (I would, however, realign the Glendale portion along Central Avenue, because Brand Blvd is now too congested to handle light-rail traffic - the old private ROW in the middle of the street is now a heavily landscaped traffic island.)
