Amtrak is offering 25% off coach fare on three California routes—including Pacific Surfliner trains between San Diego, Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo—for travel on Saturday only.

The special is part of the first National Train Day, an Amtrak effort to increase ridership and share a bit of history about the rails. The discount also applies to the San Joaquins—the train route that runs round-trip to Bakersfield from Oakland or Sacramento—and the Capitol Corridor, which operates between Sacramento and the Bay Area.

For out-of-towners: Special train day packages to Los Angeles include two nights at the Hilton in Universal City and admission to the Hollywood Wax Museum. Prices (including taxes) start at $291 per person from Santa Barbara, $307 from San Diego and $319 from Palm Springs. Rates are good for travel in May only; call (800) 268-7252.

There also will be a number of activities at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, including photo displays, train tours and a 2:30 p.m. concert by singer-songwriter Drake Bell.

Sounds a little lame, but what the hell, I'll go check it out. My kids like Drake Bell's TV show. I dunno if they like his singing. I doubt it.
