The IND To Jamaica - 75 Years Ago (4/24/1937) |
|
Posted by William A. Padron on Tue Apr 24 08:42:15 2012 And so, seventy-five years ago today, the Independent Subway System (or the IND) extended its Queensboro line towards the Jamaica section in the borough of Queens. Four new stations opened on that date back then: Van Wyck Boulevard, Sutphin Boulevard, Parsons Boulevard and 169th Street. At first, "E" trains began using that route at the time. Today, it is the "F" train that make all stops in that section, but there are the "E" trains stop at Van Wyck Boulevard (except on weekdays until 7:30pm) plus limited rush hour service to/from 179th Street (alternating with its current full time terminal at Parsons/Archer-Jamaica Center). -William A. I believe for a while that "G" trains did go up in that area, but only during the nighttime hours, towards 179th Street. When just prior to the opening of the Archer Avenue extension, there were actual signs made up to have "N" trains (and nighttime "G" shuttles)at least go through and stop at Van Wyck Boulevard, but never happened.-William A. When the 11th St. cut opened in Dec. 1955, Standards covered that route. Don't believe any Triplexes ever used it (they were normally found on the Brighton and West End Expresses in the 50s and 60s). When the R27s came on the scene in 1960 some of the first ones were assigned to the Brighton and 4th Ave. Locals which served the Queens Blvd. line. |

Its funny - Van Wyck Boulevard opened as a station on this extension in 1937 but by 1950, the roadway for which it was named was gone, swallowed whole by the southern portion of Robert Moses' Van Wyck Expressway. Despite the passage of 62 years, the station was never renamed and its still one of the prime examples of an obsolete station name in the system. |

Circa 1960, I rode a D type N/B on a Brighton Lcl on Qns Blvd. I boarded it at one of the local stations (I cant remember which one although it may have been 36 St) and I cant recall why I was boarding there since I lived in Manhattan at the time and was just railfanning that particular day. I rode it all the way to Ctl and back S/B to 34 St where I changed for an uptown IND train back home. |

I believe the Triplexes were used on the Brighton Express for both periods and on the Sea Beach Express into the early 1960's, while Standards were used on the West End Express until well into the 1960's. I used all three services in 1961 and that is the way it was. |

The train was properly signed up for the Brighton Local and had the proper Brighton Lcl markers displayed. Around that time I also recall riding the occasional D type that mad a rush hour trip on the West End Exp. Also around that time in the Eastern Div, a Multi would make a rush hour trip on the Bway Bkln Lcl usually in the AM. It depends on what the yardmaster has available for service on any given day. |

Because Van Wyck Boulevard ceased to exist as a street in 1950, when Robert Moses opened the southern portion of the Van Wyck Expressway. When that happened, the tablets started to refer to a non-existent street, much like Ely Avenue in Long Island City. Today, 62 years later, the wall tablets still refer to that non-existent street. |

As far as triplexs' running to Forest Hills, I'm thinking in terms of regular service.I was a kid growing up in Woodside & when my folks took me on the "Independent" as they called it, getting on as 65th st, I rode it often. I never saw a D type running there, just R 1/9s & standards What struck me was the lack of front end destinations or route numbers or letters on the standards, often wondering how you knew what train you were getting on. Id ask my old man & he'd say, "you see a train commin in without nuttin in front, it was the BMT" Ah yes, the simple times. Forget about destination signs of P A's. Back then, if you knew the equiptment, you'd get on the right train |

My aunts--certainly not train fans--knew the similar lights on IC Electrics and CTA L trains. Reading the lights was possible at a far greater distance than any destination sign--a critical issue when choosing whether to move away from the overhead heaters at Van Buren in the winter. |

Well all I can say to that is New Yorkers would always be skeptical that the lights were set right. Anyway, if youre on a local platform along Queens Blvd back in the 50's goin to "the city", you saw a train wid signs in front, it was an IND. A train that "looked funny" with a hint of gothic style front windows & no signs, it was a BMT train.Fuggadabout what da lights looked like. |

I used the 11th Street cut almost daily when going to and from high school (my high school was in Manhattan; I lived in eastern Queens), and normally went between 60th-Lexington and Queens Plaza. On rare occasions, a Triplex appeared rather than the usual Standards. Twice, when a Triplex appeared, I rode it northbound to either Roosevelt or Continental. Never saw a Multi on that route, however. |

Sure does. But the station itself hasn't been called Willets Point Boulevard for decades. When Shea Stadium opened in 1964, the station name was changed to "Willets Point - Shea Stadium", now referencing the area of Flushing called Willets Point, rather than the street known as Willets Point Boulevard. |

According to the station's Wikipedia page:The station's original name was Van Wyck Boulevard. It was changed to Briarwood – Van Wyck Boulevard in 1988 to avoid confusion with Jamaica – Van Wyck on the IND Archer Avenue Line. This appears to be incorrect. Note that Briarwood doesn't appear as part of the station name on the January 1994 map. I did find an article (abstract) about the Briarwood Civic Association's name change campaign in 1997. |

Indeed, I didn't see that name in use until the early 90's. The difference was necessitated by the confusion of the old and new stations on Van Wyck. I used to wonder why Jamaica-Van Wyck wasn't simply called "Jamaica Avenue", but I suppose they thought this name would confuse people into thinking they could transfer to the J here. They could have also used Metropolitan Ave. |

Or for that matter, I sometimes wonder if the station could have been called "Jamaica-89 Avenues", since there is an entry/exit at 89th Avenue there. Back when the IND was being planned, the provision (now used for the Archer Avenue route) off the main QB route was going to lead into a terminal station to be called "Jamaica & Hillside Avenues". I recall seeing such a station like that in a 1931 Franklin Savings Bank issued subway map that was on display at the Transit Museum for many years.-William A. Padron ["<-85th Av"-<"] |

In February 2010, I was on a packed rush hour R32, serving the B on CPW. Lots of people reacted if it was a C and even asked "what train is this"....and it was signed completely properly. I even said to one person "it looks like a C, but it's a B!". I was riding (as opposed to railfanning) from 167th in the Bronx to 47-50th. I can't remember if I started on the D and switched at 59th...it's possible that when I saw the R32 at 167th, I just got on. |

(You would think by now I would have responded to this thread, based on my handle).I only started using the line in the 60s, so I remember the setup at the east end of the station, where they had the ramps there, but no tracks and no switches. I sometimes wish I had the bravery (or stupidity, depending on your point of view) to have climbed down there and walked down the ramp just to see how far it went. I remember also the F trains (when they were expresses) roaring thru the station at full speed on the express tracks. I also remember the stacks of trains on the express tracks when express trains weren't in service - on the 179th st bound site for layups and also on the Manhattan bound side when they were piling up to head to Jamaica yard (forcing all Manhattan bound trains to use the local track and the F not stopping at the station. |
