According to the station's Wikipedia page:

The station's original name was Van Wyck Boulevard. It was changed to Briarwood – Van Wyck Boulevard in 1988 to avoid confusion with Jamaica – Van Wyck on the IND Archer Avenue Line.


This appears to be incorrect. Note that Briarwood doesn't appear as part of the station name on the January 1994 map. I did find an article (abstract) about the Briarwood Civic Association's name change campaign in 1997.
