I hope I live long enough to see a revenue train on the north bound express track at 57st/7th ave go up the ramp to 63/lex and on to 72st/2nd ave. This is not the same economy that built the 63st line all the way to Northern Blvd and 31st. I think the only 2 things that are sure to be finished are the 7 extension and the LIRR Grand Central connection. |

Just from one end of Second Avenue to the other (from Houston Street to 128th Street/Harlem River Drive)? An extension of the Archer Avenue Line east East to where? You want a subway to Hollis? An extension of the Astoria line to LaGuardia Sure, when they build the Astoria Subway. AN extension of the Flatbush Avenue Line to Avenue U What's the "Flatbush Avenue Line"? There's no subway under Flatbush Avenue that I know of. If you mean the 2 under Nostrand Avenue, what's at Avenue U that makes it a worthy terminus? and what makes the nearby Brighton Line insufficient? |

And have an express via the Brooklyn Bridge that continues through southeast Brooklyn to the Rockaways via a brand-new rail-only bridge across the bay? |

That is why I said Flatbust instead of Nostrand, Nostrand Avenue is 14 blocks east of the Brighton line, Flatbush Avenue is further east. A 34th Street shuttle connecting Penn Station to the east side of Manhattan, so that the "42nd Street Shuffle" can be eliminated.I would like to see a 34 St light rail someday, from river to river. A Union Turnpike trunk line off the QB line in Queens running from Queens Boulevard to the city line at Lakeville Road, so that St. John's University students can have a faster ride to and from Manhattan without enduring that pokey Q46 bus, and to give transit relief to untapped places like Kew Gardens Hills, Hillcrest, Fresh Meadows, Jamaica Estates, Bayside and Glen Oaks, none of which have never even sniffed a subway line. This proposal quickly runs into a branching problem. 15 tph Archer Av, 15 tph Hillside Av already. Plus, extending the Hillside Av Branch brings you further eat quicker, instead of largely duplicating an existing alignment to hit a lot of parkland. Reactivation of the LIRR Rockaway Line as a Penn Station-JFK link and to restore LIRR service to places like Rego Park, Woodhaven (which used to have two LIRR stations but now has none) and Ozone Park, which is underserved by the (A). I view restoration of the LIRR Rockaway Branch as disfavored. There is already a NYP-JFK link that was built at great cost. Restroing the Branch would also take resources that could achieve similar ends by taking over existing and wholly underutilized LIRR alignments like the Montauk Line in Queens. Extension of the Archer Avenue line to eastern Queens, as originally intended. Assuming takeover of the LIRR alignment, this seems sound. A tunnel to Staten Island to line the subway with SIRT and give Staten Islanders some deserved transit relief. Given the cost of the tunnel, how many years for this move to approach anything like payoff in reduced commuting time? SIR is a commuter railroad with fairly low ridership that doesn't have an optimal alignment to pick up ridership. There isn't much reason to suppose that the ferry hookup isn't optimal, all things considered. |

I would like to see restoration of train service on Third and Webster Avenues at least between East 138th Street-Third Avenue and Gun Hill Road-White Plains Road if not from East 125th Street and Lexington Avenue. This could be a benefit to middle Bronx residents whose options since April 29, 1973 have been either the (2)/(5) on Westchester Avenue/Southern Boulevard or the (B)/(D) on Grand Concourse and Boulevard. This could also possibly help to relieve Lexington Avenue. If you start at East 125th Street and Lexington Avenue, a transit center with the (4)(5)(6) (Q)(T) and MNRR could be created; if you start from East 138th Street-Third Avenue, a transfer with the (6) could be created. |

What I'd like to see in a quasi-realistic sense...-> A new deep bored trunk line from Lakeville Road near Long Island Jewish Medical Center through Glen Oaks to Oakland Gardens to Fresh Meadows Shopping Centre, then aiming for Queens College. From Queens College, the line would travel westward on a path crossing near the Queens Railway at 71st Ave, and aiming for Middle Village and Maspeth, and a swing northward under the cemeteries and Sunnyside to connect with the 63rd Street Line. -> A spur off the Canarsie Line between Montrose Avenue and Morgan Avenue stations under Bushwick, Stuyvesant, and Utica Avenues ending at an undetermined point based on demographics, NIMBY, and geotechnical concerns. -> A spur off the Flushing Line from Willets Point Boulevard station along the Whitestone Expressway ROW to 20th Avenue. Potentially, if bored, one could build a portal and extend the line via a deep bore to 14th Avenue and 150th Street. -> Extend the Pelham Line from Pelham Bay Park over the New England Thruway ROW to a station located at Bartow Avenue and Baychester Blvd. -> Extend the New Lots Line from New Lots Avenue to Gateway Centre. |

A combination of terminal improvements to the commuter rail network to support rapid-transit-like headways and new-build LRTs collecting traffic for both the existing subway system and the enhanced commuter rail network would probably go a long way toward meeting Brooklyn and Queens' transit needs.IMHO a natural progression from projects already underway to provide rapid transit headways to the inner NY metro area with commuter rail would likely include something like this: ![]() |

One solution, which I've mentioned before, would be to ramp the el underground just north of Astoria Blvd., build a new underground Ditmars station (with 3 tracks), and then run a 2-track underground extension to the airport. There would be several benefits to north Astoria residents: 1.Eliminaton of street congestion, and more air and light, at Ditmars. 2. A new station wold be built closer to the bus line at Ditmars (the current station is a good 2-city-block equivalent away). 3. The airport trains would run express in peak hours, stopping at Ditmars and Astoria Blvds. Locals would terminate at the center track at the new Ditmars station. 4. There could be 1 or 2 new stations in the Steinway area. |

What is it you find so wrong about the plan? Is it operationally unworkable? Is it technically infeasible? Is it economically nonviable? I'll grant the last one would be a difficult case to make given its capital cost. Other than money there really isn't a showstopper for that project. And I'm confident that in a cost/benefit analysis the potential for 120,000 to 180,000 commuters per hour entering Manhattan without making a transfer would trump any alternative which involves a ferry, a PATH expansion, the Jersey Central dump, or something similar. |
