I really don't see the need to spend billions of dollars on subway lines to every corner of the city. A combination of terminal improvements to the commuter rail network to support rapid-transit-like headways and new-build LRTs collecting traffic for both the existing subway system and the enhanced commuter rail network would probably go a long way toward meeting Brooklyn and Queens' transit needs.IMHO a natural progression from projects already underway to provide rapid transit headways to the inner NY metro area with commuter rail would likely include something like this:
