You can even add on the fictional ESA numbers and they still don't know what to do with all of that trackage. Also, can LIRR afford giving up track to the subway for an Archer extension? Of course. LIRR is nowhere near track capacity, and a rapid transit operation would bring one-seat rides and much quicker commutes to SE Queens while generating ridership numbers that LIRR couldn't even dream of. |

Many history books refer to Augustus as "Caesar Augustus" and having studied Latin in high school, I was always under the impression that the word "caesar" was the Latin word for a ruler, rather than a family surname and that Julius Caesar was merely the first Roman emperor to use that title and it subsequently was applied to many Roman emperors. |

Here's what I'd like to see:- T train from Dyre Avenue to Broad Street via Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and 2nd Avenue (yes, the same Broad Street the J and M trains use). - Q train from 125th Street-Broadway to Coney Island via 125th Street, 2nd Avenue and 63rd Street. - F train from 179th Street to Coney Island rerouted onto a double- track Super Express from Continental Avenue to the 63rd Street tunnel. - V train rerouted to Queens Boulevard express tracks and extended to Springfield Boulevard via the Hillside Avenue express tracks. - N train rerouted to 63rd Street tunnel, replacing LIRR service to Port Washington, using hybrid subway/commuter rail trains (similar to Washington's Metrorail cars). Most N trains short-turn at Great Neck due to the single-track line between there and Port Washington. One or two new stations along the existing Port Washington Line to help relieve overcrowding on the 7. - W train running full-time and replacing N service to Ditmars/Astoria. No more crazy switching between Times Square and 34th Streets, which currently delays all Broadway Line service. - 5 train operates between Nereid Avenue and Flatbush Avenue rush hours in both directions. Middays, evenings and weekends, 5 terminates in the Bronx at East 180th Street. - E and W trains extended from Lower Manhattan to Staten Island via new tunnel under New York Harbor. - V train extended to Church Avenue while F runs express between Jay and Church. - 7 train extended to Lower Manhattan via 11th Avenue and West Street. Subway tunnel would have at least three tracks. |

I would like to see a 34 St light rail someday, from river to river.I'd like to see one on a number of crosstown streets as well. The 34th Street Crosstown streetcar would probably be a better bang for buck for connecting those coming from Penn Station or Herald Square to Javitz and the mythical office developments projected for that area. This proposal quickly runs into a branching problem. Despite the ridership of the Q43, I've always felt that a line should be slightly to the North around Jewel Avenue since Hillside is too close to Union Turnpike. I've looked at a new line in the area as a tool to kill off the express buses in an area that's far from the commuter rail equivalents and subway service. I view restoration of the LIRR Rockaway Branch as disfavored. The general theory behind the development in that branch is that it should provide a faster route to MIdtown for Rockaway residents, while providing Midtown service for those in Ozone Park, Woodhaven, Richmond Hill, and southern Rego Park. Mind you, I've viewed turning over the branch to NYCTA to be a complete abortion given that by the time the M-1s arrived, we'd probably have an 80 mph MAS in lieu of NYCTA's "scenic route" to Midtown at 35 to 45 mph. Given the cost of the tunnel, how many years for this move to approach anything like payoff in reduced commuting time? If you view transit as simply a policy tool, and your goal is simply to reduce commuting time regardless of the costs and ridership counts, then yes, but if you demand some degree of efficiency, then it remains to be seen if there's any real payoff in construction a multi-billion dollar tunnel for 485,000 residents. I think this is one of those issues that requires professional studies to what alignments, routings, and schedules lead to the increased ridership away from cars, express buses, normal buses, and the ferry to achieve maximum ridership to justify the tunnel. Otherwise, extend HBLR over the Bayonne Bridge to Staten Island, and consider a bus over to Perth Amboy NJT... |

Are you sure LIRR can afford to lose that line? The way that I look at it, can we afford not to have LIRR lose that segment? LIRR bleeds money so to try to implement a rapid transit network through them is to do something that first off, the commuter rail system isn't well suited for, and then to overpay handsomely to do it. We have rail in SE Queens - the key is to use it to benefit the people there, to reduce their commuting time substantially, and without picking up the massive subsidy tab that would be required to sustain LIRR operations at short service intervals, while ensuring that LIRR has adequate capacity. Using the peak throughput of both the Atlantic and Montauk Lines, it's clear that LIRR does not need 4 tracks to move that load. That's without even taking into account the LIRR Main Line Third Track project. |

Still, I'd like to see the data that proves what you're talking aboutTake the most ambitious projection, which is LIRR's plan to maintain current AM peak service at NYP at 36 tph while adding 24 tph of peak service at ESA and making no cutbacks. Make the extremely conservative assumption that Patchogue/Speonk/Montauk trains will run to Jamaica/NYP/HPA/LIC via the Montauk Line. The figure is then 22 tph, of which the diesel trains make up about 18%. Quite doable and then some with two tracks, and if you subtract out the diesel trains on the assumption that they will be sent via Main Line Third Track, then it's 18 tph. If anything, the proposed takeover makes the switching work easier by ruling out several sets of conflicting moves. |

I thought you were talking about the lower Montauk. Not for the SE Queens expansion, no. However, in another post, I did propose the following: NYCT takeover of a segment of the LIRR Montauk Line roughly between 121 St and the NYCT Myrtle Av Branch ROW; and NYCT takeover of the LIRR Atlantic Line west of Jamaica; and Elimination of the present NYCT el between Broadway Jct and 121 St. |

You're disagreeing just for the sake of disagreeing? Who cares? I think the rolling stock is a bore. If you don't get it or see it, just pay no mind. I don't really care what you think unless you have a valid argument. You don't. Look at all the system around the world listed right on this website. Again, if you don't get, move on already. |
