Why would they need to terminate the M on the Lower Level, thus making everyone who wants to travel further to traverse further,m what's wrong with the upper level? Sure,m if the M went to Dtimas,m that would be a different story,m but I see no reason the M would nee to terminate on the lower level.

I'm sure you are correct. But the situation Bill described can occur exactly as easily on the City Hall Loop as anywhere else. My question is: why does NYCT consider Bill's points important on, say, the Bowling Green loop but not the City Hall Loop? The exact same incident Bill describes could happen equally well in either place.

Thanks, Chris R16/R2730. I read your interesting point about the (M) and Culver and was inspired to ask how it would've changed Brighton if the M.T.A. had done this in 1975. I agree with your post, BTW.

The QJ ran to Coney Island until 1972 LATE December...
The M began it's run to C.I January 1973 right after new years day.

With the route change, came the name change..along with a car change.
R27/30/32/42 became M line regulars..while all of the pre war R units moved over to the J/K/LL lines with Some 27/30's thrown in.

The QJ/KK signs were all gone,covered with black tape untill new station signs were put in place,by the fall of 72...even before the routes were changed.The new signs had PAPER COVERINGS over them[hiding the route changes]...

They even taped over the signs on the trains common and uncommon to the Eastern Division.

Was the Jamaica Macy's customer base suburban? Chances are most of their customer base was arriving by public tranportation, bus or subway. Why eliminate their way of getting to the store?

It may have been politically motivated but I wouldn't lose sleep over that one. Remember, before the R46s arrived in Queens they were still running many R9s on the E & F along with the 38s, slants and 44s.

Lots of tracks used for relays are revenue trackage.

A3 and A4 tracks south of Brighton Beach are revenue trackage.
The middle track south of Bay Parkway is revenue trackage.
The express tracks at 4th Avenue are revenue trackage.
The middle track north of Parkchester is revenue trackage.

Devil''s advocate position: Maybe Macy's and the others actually thought that by forcing the El dismantled early the TA would be forced to speed up implementation of the Archer Av project, and then they found out, no, that wasn't going to happen.

No, instead, when there's a blockage at 9th Av., they'll keep pushing the M's out on the local behind it, and start sending the D's down the express, around it. I was on that end of an M job once, and saw it myself while waiting to go out, and it was like "so this is why the M's disappear". So it's like screw the M line's whole base of service on the other end, for what reason; I don't know. (If the D is stuck, you still have the B uptown, it's only Myrtle that gets left with NOTHING).
When I saw that, that was when I said the reverse peaks should be eliminated, and the northbound service start from closer in.

But those aren't exceptions. Trains are cleared out before they enter relays no matter what, whether or not the tracks they use are revenue tracks.

AIUI, there is a total of one exception to that policy: City Hall loop -- because trains have to go straight from Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge, with nowhere else to go or come from (aside from the two layup tracks), so the risk is really no greater than on any other mostly empty train traveling between stations.

I don't think it would have mattered - they lost the walk-in traffic generated by the El - when the subway moved to Archer Ave people got on their buses there to continue their rides home and did not go out of their way to visit the stores. I think the stores underestimated the amount of incidental traffic they had as opposed to customers actively seeking them out. As long as they were convenient - people shopped there - when people had to walk out of their way they simply stopped shopping there instead....

I tend to agree with that sentiment yet with els the "every stop" effect doesn't seem to pain as much. Especially along the Jamaica Avenue/Broadway line. I guess being able to see all the buildings and terrain passing by better defines the notion of gettin' somewhere than a tunnel journey with nothing but lights marking the passage.

Again, especially along the J line neighborhoods. From Jamaica I almost always choose el over sub.

Most people choose the E over the J/Z because it serves midtown, AND downtown. It takes roughly the same amount of time for the E to get to lower manhattan as the J/Z, but the E directly goes to midtown. Taking the J to get to midtown would take you an additional 20-25 minutes, a substantial amount of time!

Well, okay, I was talking about when I'm headed towards Brooklyn or Lower Manhattan. Which is where I'm usually going to anyway. But even for Midtown it's not bad. Easy enough to transfer to East and Westside express trains. The crowds on the Q.B. lines suck, J train gets you a seat, most times. And (this is less logical) I happen to like passing through the old Brooklyn neighborhoods. I like going by East New York and Bedford and Stuyvesant and Bushwick and Williamsburg. Passing by Kew Gardens and Forest Hills and Jackson Heights and Woodside don't hold the same thrill for me. (Jamaica and L.I.C. are the only exceptions to this, community-wise)

I think so since the (V) or (W) don't run 24/7 and there aren't any other alternatives except for the SAS.

In Jamaica, you stand a pretty good chance of getting a seat on the E. Yes, some have to stand. Not all.

To the avg commuter, this isn't a concern.
