Myrtle was in bad shape, but the route itself did merit a train and probably still merits a train today if you could find the money.

The problem with the Myrtle el was not only its condition, but the fact that it ended in downtown brooklyn, instead of being hooked up to one of the tubes in downtown brooklyn which had the capacity.

But don't you consider downtown Brooklyn a valid destination? The LIRR does.

I'd rebuild a Myrtle subway (as a subway, not an El) and have it terminate in dowtown Brooklyn where people can transfer to many other lines. If the same train could continue into Manhattan that's gravy.

Yes, but not anywhere on the magnitude of the Lower Manhattan Financial District just across the River. And while downtown Brooklyn is growing, only a few of those new buildings being either planned or under construction are offices; the rest are more and more condos/co-ops.

There are 2 tubes from Downtown Brooklyn to manhattan with a huge amount of capacity (Montague and Rutgers). hook it up.

What about Atlantic Yards? You are referring to some local residents being pissed off about the project? OK.

My personal take on Atlantic Yards is, it needs to move forward. The loudmouths are entitled to protest (First Amendment), but not hijack the whole project, as they do not speak for the whole community. It will be very good for the area, good for improving local transit facilities, and who knows, it may, in the long haul, provide an impetus for subway expansion in Brooklyn. I support Forrest Rattner on this project, but also support modifications to address local resident concerns.

How many homes are being bulldozed there? I'm aware of homes being added in residential towers. There are none being bulldozed.

The protesters have not complained of homes being lost. They are complaining about the debsity of new homes.

The one current project where homes are being bulldozed soon is the SAS to make subway entrances.

As I've said time and time again, even with 2 operators on the train, nothing will stop a troublemaker from pulling an emergency cord in order to make it necessary for a crew member to enter the same car as the culprit to reset it, thereby setting up a possible crime against the employee or the accusation of wrong doing made by a customer against the employee.

If that is a NYCT concern, why do they allow #6 passengers to remain on the train at BB?

Atlantic Yards is a very interesting topic, IMO. Many of the buildings slated for demolition are old factories that either were converted to Co-ops/condos or were about to be. (I'm actually old enough to remember when the factories were in use: when Pechters bakery used to fill the air of the whole area with the smell of baked goods, and the Daily News was printed right there, delivery trucks parked in the Atlantic Yard). Additionally, there are lots of houses in the way. Many of the people who have taken over this area are well to do white folks, while a lot of the surrounding neighborhood (to the north and east) remains black. Virtually all of this new middle class is opposed to Ratner's project. All of the poorer class seems to be for it. The people with the most to loose are those who live either on the site, or next to it, and all of them are staunchly opposed.

We'll see what happens in the end (My opinion is that Atlantic Yards is the perfect place for a mega dense development like this), but this is a case of Ratner getting his agenda pushed through, despite the cries of the locals.

I have a friend who lives on Pacific st..targeted for demolishion by F/R.

They offered her a WONDERFUL settlement for her to move..almost twice what she paid for her home...

She still deciding..but I feel as if she leaning toward taking the funds.

She better..cause those buildings are coming down no matter what they do.

OK, so "urban pioneers" came in and are now soiling their pants having diarrhea because their investment just went up in smoke.

With good negotiators representing them, they can come out with fair prices.

The poorer folks living there need jobs locally. Investing in that area is very important.

Yes, I think she should take it.

I don't want to paint everyone with the same brush, but when I lived in Germantown (Philly)I rehabbed two old houses on west Walnut Lane, just off Germantown Av. My neighbors were mostly upper income whites. Across Germantown Av were middle to lower income blacks. My neighbors never took any interest or had any empathy for anyone not in their snooty group. They thought it really strange that I took an interest in Germantown High and patronized black-owned businesses on Germantown Av. They'd shit in their pants whenever there was any word of new business development along Germantown Av. God forbid that we'd actually tackle local unemployment by letting new businesses open on a commercial street!

To me, the other side of Germantown av was part of my neighborhood.

Myrtle wasn't as bad as they say...

it had a minor rebuild during the 50's..

The problem here was the fact that it was a victim of developers...and of extreme short sightedness.

While it is true that SOME work was needed to upgrade it the B-DIVISION standards..where heavier cars Could have been used..the TA decided that it was no longer needed,DESPITE THE HEAVY USAGE..it would have saved money removing it than saving it.

There was More to this than they were ever willing to PUBLICLY announce..but demographics had a major part to play in its removal.

Plainly speaking..the neighborhood was changing..and the devoloper wanted to gut EVERY SINGLE HOME along Myrtle ave from downtown to Broadway..and replace them with "Model Cities" type homes pushed during the 50's-70's...

It was no surprise that the city took the FIRST step by building the rows of housing projects/condo's...and the "developer" backed out afterwards...leaving vaccant lots in his wake,and the elevated rail line gone.

Prior to the Brighton Line being connected to the subway, the Brighton Line trains reached the city via the Franklin Avenue Line and Fulton Street El to Park Row. By 1939, The Brighton Beach Local was terminating at 57th Street and the Express at Times Square. When the R27s arrived in 1960, the original (Q) briefly terminated at Astoria and had two sisters as the local - the (QB) and the (QT). These jointly were what would've been the (QQ). When today's (J) was extended to Coney Island, it was the (QJ) and I believe the (QT) was ended when it started. The M.T.A. decided to send the (M) to Coney Island and cut the (QJ) to Broad Street but it kept the (QJ) letter until 1976. By 1970, the (Q) and (QT) were gone and the (QB) was rush hours only. The Brighton Line had become the (D) and the (M) and would remain so until the mid 1980's. The (QB) became the (Q) in 1985 and began her comeback to a full time route.

I just rode down Myrtle all the way to B'way the other day, and a LOT of those vacant lots are being developed. Still quite a few undeveloped, but a LOT of new construction.

Thanks for the history.

The (QB) became the (Q) in 1985 and began her comeback to a full time route.

IMO, they picked the worst possible time to do that.

An interesting sidenote to GP38/R42 Chris' post: rather than the (QQ), the Brighton Local became (QB) - "Q via bridge" and (QT) - "Q via tunnel". When today's (J) was extended to Coney Island briefly, it became the (QJ) - "Q via the Jamaica Line". By 1970, it was cut back to Broad Street but kept the (QJ) through 1976.

Beacuse there is a bulletin about the tracks on the BB Loop are "reveune" tracks so passengers can stay on the train thats why.

This was mentioned quite a few times by myself and other RTO personel who post on this board..
