I'll contribute $500 to the governor of my choice - that's how *I* got handle time on the 143's before NYCTA got their mitts on them aside from "C division" ... heh. Been there, done that, paid to push the green buttons and do some joystick in non-revenue. (grin)

As I've always said ... "ANY moron can make a train go ... takes TALENT to make one stop. Takes even MORE talent to make them stop at a 10 car marker." But hey ... as Darius taught us all, have handles, WILL move train. And where she stops? Five-oh. *NO* 006 for you! Heh.

Don`t tear down stuff until the new service/Subway is built." The Culver, Mrytle Ave, 3rd Ave.(Man&Bx) are prime examples.

The Culver and Myrtle were never going to be replaced by subway. The Culver, while interesting, was not useful enough to enough people. Anyone who wanted to get to 4th avenue services from the F line can do so at 4th avenue station. Otherwise, while the shuttle was nice, it was ultimately an unnecessary line. Myrtle, OTOH was a travesty.

Yeah, makes it EXTRA convenient to go all the way up to 4th Ave, deal with all those stairs, then backtrack to 36th St. If the M ever ran via the Culver to Ditmas, it'd be the more desirable connection.

I never said it was convenient. But too few people used the service.

I'm also puzzled as to why people think the M would've been sent down the line. Before it's takeover by the IND, the Culver was a through service to Nassau, but this was not preserved in anyway afterward. This option existed the entire time; I'm not sure shifting the M over there would have changed their opinion.

While it`s true that the Culver and Mrytle were not going to be replaced with subways, I`m sure you get my point.

The Culver while not well used,(long headways-only one shuttle train in service at a time)would have provided options for routings including another option to CI Yard.

Through service from Nassau St. survived for 5 years after the IND takeover south of Ditmas. But the NYCTA or whatever organization was running the system then wanted no part of maintaining this line and it gradually decreased service (and patronage) to the point that it could consider abandonment. The service cuts drove ridership down, not vice versa. It was a policy which worked well on the 3rd Ave el starting after WWII.

Yes..they chased the riders away..and it was done INTENTIONALLY to "prove" ridership was down...not worth the effort to renovate...exactly like the Bronx 3rd avenue EL..the outer end of the Jamaica Ave El..and the Culver el..

By the way..has anyone taken a really Good look at the remaining structure over McDonalds Avenue?
There are some stations with HOLES as big as your fist in the Mezz walls..crumbling wooden floors..spaulding concrete...just LOOKS unsafe..like you are going to fall thur the floor to the pavement below.

Of course they do. People don't commit suicide when their train gets cancelled; they find a way to make do. Same thing in the Bronx when the Third Av El got cancelled.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't think about replacing it.

The Ninth Av El got cancelled, but it was replaced by the Concourse Line and Eight Av IND services. We're taking baby steps to finally creating the SAS, which was supposed to replace the Third Av El in Manhattan (and eventually the Bronx???). Why not the Myrtle?

See, doesn't that prove I'm not strictly Manhattan-centric?

I'm pretty sure it was OIL and not grease in those cups with the woolies on the old arnines ... but THAT smell wasn't a mystery at all. It was what was beyond the cab door that you just didn't want to open to find out. :)

Amazing what an infusion of money can do. Never had any in the 70s.

Service cuts are not always a bad thing. If people can be moved more efficiently by getting rid of a service, then do it.

The ridership IS there...
They just use other modes of transportation...rather than wait on a slow bus..or a jacked up G train.

Heck, even the G has been better than riding the bus lately.

Few days ago..I was on a extremely crowded 54 bus..I mean this bus was so packed that Nobody could get on...nobody..
Yet the drive stopped at the shelters anyway.

If this was the EL..it wouldn't have put a dent in it...yet the MTA continued to reduce service on ALL the lines serving north Brooklyn..not just the 54 route.

When most lines into the outer-boros were built there weren't enough people let alone riders. The (7) went through farmland. That changed within a few years.

While a Myrtle subway would be nice, I think there are other more important prorities in future MTA Capital Plans.
