Westbury is a cash cow. For every station that generates revenue others offset it with lower ridership.

For Westbury, yes. Half the Huntington trains and half the still-born Ronkonkoma or Farmingdale trains.

So now Babylon gets a consistent 2 trains per hour. A local and a semi-local or another local. Some of the south shore shuttles connect with locals (that should be semi-locals).

With all of LIRR revenue problems, they leave money at the table. Lack of needed frequencies costs them round trip revenue. Substitute Westbury for Cold Spring Harbor for the skip-stop - done. What's the big deal.

Many thanks for finding and reproducing that Gibson ad from 1931. The archives of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle are a mine of forgotten historical items, but this is the first blatant ad I have seen. What I have encountered (and no longer have the links) are the mainline pastors who accepted awards from the KKK in the1920's or who addressed their rallies.

damn. nice. lived on beach 100th street until i was seven, 1961. have fond memories of the beach 98th street -playland station. even at five years old i knew there was something different about the rockaway line. the extra long platforms, at least compared to the jamaica avenue el, the unique style of the elevated structure, the pay-another-token-you-exit system.

didn't find out til much later that it was an ex-lirr line.

rockaway beach was a pretty cool place to be a little kid then. playland, the ocean, elevated electric trains, arcades and salt water taffy stands along rockaway beach boulevard, the whole shebang.

and the honest exhaust smell of the rockaway beach buses mixed with the hot tar and cotton candy and the salt air...perfume to a five year old. every time i see a bus my nose seeks out that delight.

rebuild the far rockaway deletion. extend the far rockaway lirr branch to beach 116th street.

two reasons:

1. as cool as it would be to have new service across the trestle through woodhaven up to rego park it's hard for me to see that happening.

2. rockaway peninsula is not subway turf.

i think doing this will upgrade the area.

But there is certainly the chance that I'm remembering incorrectly too!

My mother had friends who lived at about Beach 97th Street on the Jamaica Bay side. Instead of grass on their front lawn they had sand.

During Hurricane Donna in 1960 there had about three feet of water in their house. Nevertheless it was fun to visit them especially with Playland so close.

Thanks for the memories.

NYC/LI used to have "coal gas", made by locally (per county) baking coal in ovens at a plant. Oil was far far cheaper than coal gas. Coal gas only made sense for cooking and lighting, never heating. Eventually high pressure nat gas pipelines were built to NYC and nat gas is same or lower cost per BTU vs oil.

When we bought our house (built 1925) in the 5 Towns in 2000, the boiler was this huge monstrosity wrapped in asbestos. It was originally a coal burner (the closed up chute was still in the wall) that had been converted to oil. We ripped it out and put in a gas burner.

I think what he means is more the service type. In general, after reaching a certain distance from a city, regional rail is more appropriate than a city subway.

But like you say, political boundaries (especially those that prevent proper fare integration between modes) and socioeconomic status of neighborhood can throw off any set rule on distance, and I concur that leaving the Rockaways with only Zone 4 LIRR service is impractical.

It would force most of them onto the Q53 and Q35.

London, England has the London Overground concept - a hybrid transit/commuter rail model of circumferential lines and eastern distant branches of what was London Underground with 4 car trains, what
the RBB should be.

LIRR fares and Unlimited Metrocard have decimated ridership on the Hempstead, West Hempstead, and Far Rockaway Branches as it is.

The Friday, pre-sunset, seasonal express train to Far Rockaway now has an added stop in Rosedale. It seems North Woodmere residents have relearned the trick of driving to Zone 3 to pay lower fares.

MTA's stupid planners assigned to Queens Bus Redesign proposed killing the Q53-SBS, that replaced a rail service, retaining the weak sister Q52, and disintegrating Jackson Hts/74th Street bus hub at the subway junction. Planners like buses because they are "flexible" - so flexible in fact, they can get rid of them. Make it a rail service, and they will be unable to play games.

While I will politely disagree about the history of the line (as replacing a rail service) being all that relevant (and trust me, I have a love of history), I agree that the Q53-SBS is an important service and it was silly to consider removing a direct link between the Cross Bay/Woodhaven corridor and Jackson Heights/Woodside.

If they arranged for the Q35 to go all the way to connect with the Q52 at the Cross Bay bridge, and they ran the Q52 at a very high frequency (basically the combined Q52/53 frequency of today) and extended that to Woodside, then theoretically you could consider removing the Q53 and not hurt anyone too badly. I don't recommend any of that though. The current setup is probably the best for the moment.

I don't think the history of any line (bus, train, boat, or whatever) should dictate its current operation, one way or another.

Just because the Q53 replaced a rail line doesn't mean that for all eternity it needs to replicate that rail line exactly, especially if neighborhoods redevelop and ridership patterns change. Who knows if, presuming the trackage stayed in place, the LIRR itself wouldn't have reconfigured the routing of its trains at some point if ridership patterns changed enough?

But conversely, if the Q53 is still doing well and serving the dual purpose of getting people from the Rockaways to mainland Queens, and then also from Cross Bay/Woodhaven over to Woodside/Jackson Heights, and people are happy, you don't mess with it.

It's good to know the history, but only to the extent that it helps form the line for the present day.

Ok. What I would say is that the Rockaways are a tough place to travel to and fro via public transportation.
If the bus line replaced a railroad that could make that trip in a manageable amount of time and winds up over time slowing down to a crawl, the intention of the bus is forgotten.

I wonder who has that telephone number (now 516-825-2300) today? The VAlley Stream 5 exchange still exists although the Verizon switch that serves it is actually located in Lynbrook. Before 1930 you dialed the first three digits of the exchange name and the four digit number when making local calls. There were no area codes before 1947 so you needed an operator to call anywhere outside your own local calling area. New York City's included some of the suburbs in Nassau and Westchester so when the phone company started running out of usable exchange names the system was expanded by using a 2L-5N format. Most of the old exchanges in New York still exist today in the digital world although the old panel switches that once served them have long since been melted down for scrap. Also the Curtiss Field which is mentioned in the ad is now the site of the Green Acres Mall. The train takes longer to get to Valley Stream and Gibson from NYP or Brooklyn these days but the ride is more comfortable and a lot safer than in the days when the MP54 cars ruled the LIRR.

West Hempstead Branch:

Westwood to the N4, Franklin Square people formerly parking at Malverne, Hempstead Gardens and West Hempstead to the N6. Lakeview was never much to begin with.

It would be an interesting experiment to put the two versions side by side for a time just to see what would happen. Have coexist the current Q53-SBS alongside the older non-stop variant running at railroad frequencies and at railroad fares and see how people react.

People that need to get to Woodside or whatever subway connection like the old 63rd Drive stop the Q53 served would have no problem with it.

They won't pay LIRR-level fares. They are higher than even Express bus fares.
