Re: Question About Pre-1950 Rockaway Beach/Far Rockaway LIRR Service

I don't think the history of any line (bus, train, boat, or whatever) should dictate its current operation, one way or another.

Just because the Q53 replaced a rail line doesn't mean that for all eternity it needs to replicate that rail line exactly, especially if neighborhoods redevelop and ridership patterns change. Who knows if, presuming the trackage stayed in place, the LIRR itself wouldn't have reconfigured the routing of its trains at some point if ridership patterns changed enough?

But conversely, if the Q53 is still doing well and serving the dual purpose of getting people from the Rockaways to mainland Queens, and then also from Cross Bay/Woodhaven over to Woodside/Jackson Heights, and people are happy, you don't mess with it.

It's good to know the history, but only to the extent that it helps form the line for the present day.
