Re: Question About Pre-1950 Rockaway Beach/Far Rockaway LIRR Service

Posted by Joe V on Thu Feb 18 13:35:05 2021, in response to Re: Question About Pre-1950 Rockaway Beach/Far Rockaway LIRR Service, posted by Osmosis Jones on Thu Feb 18 13:20:43 2021.

Weekdays from 1972 to 1998, Long Beach was a Brooklyn Branch off peak.
Several Babylon train stopped at Valley Stream to make connections when a Long Beach train was not present at that part of the hour when a shuttle ran. When it was a Long Beach train, it seemed more people transferred to the Far Rockaway train than remained on the Long Beach train.

Weekends from 1976 to 1998, Far Rockaway was a mess of 60 and 90 minute intervals of Jamaica and Valley Stream terminus. Initially they were using 2 train sets to cover Far Rockaway and West Hempstead. During one interval in the afternoon, a West Hempstead train started from Jamaica, and the Far Rockaway was a shuttle. They squeezed everyone into 2 cars, tight fit, and conductors refused to open additional cars.

Over the years, they extended more Far Rockaway trains from Jamaica, requiring a 3rd train set. Vestiges of that exist today in overnight weekend schedules, which are a clockface mess as they were then.
