damn. nice. lived on beach 100th street until i was seven, 1961. have fond memories of the beach 98th street -playland station. even at five years old i knew there was something different about the rockaway line. the extra long platforms, at least compared to the jamaica avenue el, the unique style of the elevated structure, the pay-another-token-you-exit system.

didn't find out til much later that it was an ex-lirr line.

rockaway beach was a pretty cool place to be a little kid then. playland, the ocean, elevated electric trains, arcades and salt water taffy stands along rockaway beach boulevard, the whole shebang.

and the honest exhaust smell of the rockaway beach buses mixed with the hot tar and cotton candy and the salt air...perfume to a five year old. every time i see a bus my nose seeks out that delight.
